They see a shit-storm coming and are trying to avoid blame. If they can dodge a part of it, they can also hope to pick up the pieces of the Liberals and realise the age-old NDP dream of moving into Official Opposition status- but weathering the typhoon is the main objective.
I can’t recall the Liberal Party ever being pushed into third place.
This iteration of it however seems determined to try . . .

Never achieved, but the NDP has always dreamed of emulating the British Labour party replacing the Liberals.
It would be nice to punt the Conservatives into third place.
I acknowledge they are almost certain to win the next election. Without a climate plan and with the mean-spirited bitching of their current “leader” (I place this term in quotation marks) I doubt they’ll stay in power much longer than that.

Did you mean this?
Old Royal Canadian Air Farce radio bit:
“We must take this unholy creature to a crossroads at midnight, drive a stake through it’s heart, cut it’s head off, and and bury it in an unmarked grave- then we will be rid of this curse once and for all!!”
“I dunno- the Liberals have been down in the polls before…”
Pretty obvious
