Does anyone know the consequences of leaving without paying the early contract breaking fee with Chung Hwa land lines and ADSL Hinet? I know that I am going to have to leave before the contract is up, and am disgruntled to have to pay the fine, but am wondering what happens if you just don’t pay it?
It’s because of people like you who leave and don’t pay their bills or fines that the rules have changed so that the new people coming in can’t get phone lines without a guarantor.
Nothing will happen. Your bill will acrue interest, Chunghua Telecom will start civil proceedings. They will be notified you have left the country.
However you may find if you ever visit again you cannot leave Taiwan until you’ve paid the fine, additional penalties and interest payments.
Okay, fair enough, I’ll be good and pay it off when I leave. I do think that it sucks that you have to apply for a 2 year sign up right off the bat though. But I am generally an honest person and the money probably wouldn’t be worth the guilt anyhow.

Its not “stupid conscience.” You are doing the right thing and thats what you know is the best thing. You admit you are an honest person and thats what is leading you to do the right thing. Good for You! Seriously, I am glad you decided to do the right thing.
Be happy knowing you have a good foundation in your life.
Take Care. :bravo:

You don’t have to sign a 2 year contract… you probably did so to get a cheaper rate contract, which are for 2 years or more. Perhaps the sales staff were unable to inform you correctly.
No. For a foreigner to get ADSL in Taichung you have to sign up for the two years if you do not want to drag a Taiwanese friend with you to co-sign. The rate is not cheaper. I can speak Chinese and had a lovely debate with several of the staff about that very issue and the two year thing is a given if you are a foreigner. This has been my and many a friend’s experience here.
If it was me and I was facing a fine for signing a two-year contract based on my race, even though the government only allows me an ARC for just one year based on my race, I’d be inclined to take the fine along in NT$1 coins and flip them at the cashier one by one. Try and persuade Apple Daily to send along a photographer, too.
Better yet, go to the Post Office and get a whole shitload of those NT$1/2 coins if they still have them.
