Can't get Cable Internet connected!

hi I know this must sound stupid but I’m going insane here!God knows I’ve tried everything,it just doesn’t make sense…

I recently moved to a new place.Got Cable Internet hooked up to my PC which I bought from a Chinese friend(Celeron 2.0Ghz 512MB RAM,works fine).I use a Harddrive which I brought from South Africa, its got XP Pro (English Version) on it.

For some reason the bloody computer stays offline,i’ve had “specialists” from the cable company in there(their English is limited to Bye bye!),no one can help meit reads the LAN settings perfectly,it reads and displays the IP address settings, but when I click on Internet Explorer it doesn’t connect.
Anyone had this problem? How do I remedy this? Its really strange, cos the landlord connected his laptop and it worked, and I took my computer to a computer store with ADSL and it worked. I’m travelling 40min a day now to an internet shop while I’ve got a perfectly good connection in my room!Taking a chance, hopefully someone else had this problem and fixed it.

In your explorer does the “Cannot find server” page show immediately or after a few seconds after you start IE?

Did you browse through a proxy before?

Have you tried the network setup wizard in xp?

You can find it in the control panel, or you can open it by typing
“rundll32 hnetwiz.dll,HomeNetWizardRunDll” in the start/run (windowskey - R)

Make sure all your LAN settings are set to default…

Obtain IP address automatically etc…

And no proxy servers are set in IE Tools/Options/Connections
