Of course, cats get fed by their owners 2-3 times day as well, so they should also lookout for the providers of food.

Cats don’t go killing stuff for food, they do it for fun.
My cat does a preview licking my hands - I hate that- then moving on to scratch my eyes or tongue out.
“The sun is up, so should you! Where’s our breakfast?!”
Then you get up and feed them - unless the bowls are still full, then shake them around a bit. Check the water, clean the litter boxes, and maybe, maybe you will be spared being scratched on the face or peed on.
Meow would meow all the time at 5 am then wants to scratch my face or bite my ears.
And the food bowl is full and level, litter is clean.
Maybe the cats lonely. Some cats need to be in a multi cat household.
If you got 1 cat a second cat is not that much more.
Yes, millions of years of evolution have given them finely-honed hunting skills solely for the purpose of “having fun.” 
The explanation given is that they are afraid we are dead, as we sleep at night, which is when they are active. They feel they must protect us from predators and make sure we know what is going on…and feed them.
