it’s tempting to write a rhetoric driven defense but i can see the reviewer’s point. i am a fan of chan marshall’s older work, which tended to be volatile, moody and emotionally carthartic. i think the experience one retains after leaving a show is invariably connected to one’s mindset going in. i wouldn’t recommend those who are looking for a good night of entertainment to shell out the money. her onstage breakdowns are notorious and public opinion is divided.
i don’t know, i’m a hardcore fan so i am going just to get a glimpse. this has got to be one of the more amazing bands that have visited taiwan. i missed mogwai, yo la tengo and cat power on her last trip, i wouldn’t miss this for the world. she doesn’t tour a lot, i go to school in toronto and she doesn’t seem to go there at all so this is an awesome opportunity.
She’s bringing a band? Are you sure? I remember being bitterly disappointed when John Zorn was advertised as coming here with Naked City, his fantastic band of that time, and not finding out until we were in the theatre that he was touring alone.
Artists visiting Taiwan do this a lot, especially non-mainstream ones, as its often not worth the expense and mafan of bringing a band.
actually, i am not sure. i know dirty three tours with her sometimes but i am sure they would be advertised if they were on the bill. you’re probably right about her touring alone, but i am still rather thrilled nevertheless.
Damn! Don’t remind me – they played the Wall just a few weeks ago and I missed it. :fume:
oh, but you have company.
I must say I really love Cat Power-and the lack of quality live music around town makes the show a bit tempting-unfortunately I had the opportunity to see her in Chicago twice-(I don’t know why-both were shit)-She like freaked out on stage, and just started crying and apologizing -it was really weird-she kept saying she felt uncomfortable doing live shows, and mumbling-but I wonder, if she hates live shows so much-how come she keeps touring?-is it like a front- to keep up with her scared, sad, hermitic sound quality-I ask you all-what do you think?
I don’t know what I think, just that it was quite eerie, and I have never, I mean never seen someone do that on stage before…
So will I be going to the show-NO-Will I play her albums all night, singing along and crying in my beer to her sweet sweet voice-you betcha
For the right price, I’d pay to witness that…if only to say that I did.
If listening to a girl with a guitar play a ten minute dirge-version of Blue Moon is your idea of a good time… then you’re in for a treat.
Hate to say it as I like all of the albums she put out, but… as a solo act, she’s lacking. I’ve seen her fall apart once, I think this time I’ll save myself the pain and money.
hell, i’ve been to a ricky martin show (cousin worked at motorola, had free passes) so this certainly wouldn’t be my worst concert experience. and really, one really has to see this sort of thing for oneself. i’ll post updates about the onstage breakdowns or lack thereof.

Also don’t worry about it, The Dirty Three is coming back to Taiwan for one off show in big HoHaiYan Rock Festival in July with JSBX and new funny rock icon Andrew W. K… D3 will co-headline to show with JSBX.
and…IT’S FREE!!! GET READY!!!
Holy crap - JSBX and the Dirty Three on the same lineup - awesome… JSBW live are INSANE!
are you sure she is playing at 8? she started playing much later than that last night. i will be the chinese girl wearing a brown university of toronto t-shirt.
I am sure!! She will play about 8 or somthing. The reason she played late last night, it’s because there were 4 artists (inc. her) on the bill. There will be only 2 artists will play tonight, Chan and Varo. It will be great.
She even sang karaoke on the stage last night.
It was great!!
Try to be there early, there were about 600 previous Leaf Festival holders already will be there. Only be very few tickets will on sale @ door. It will sell out for sure!! ![]()
After that you guys can all have a party and drink with Chan.

The show I saw was in a little theater back behind Asiaworld Plaza somewhere.
The screamer was there, though. For someone who’d paid to see Bill Frisell, Fred Frith, Joey Baron and Wayne Horvitz, the histrionics of Yamatsuka Eye came as something of a rude shock! ![]()
