Hello! I was doing some online research on Taiwanese social welfare policies, and stumbled upon this interesting site. Thought I’d sign up and check things out.
Apologies to mods, as there doesn’t seem to be a forum for newbies…
A little about myself. My mandarin is pretty bad, and I can’t read nor write Chinese. I was born in Taipei, and left Taiwan when I was six, so I’m technically not an ABC. I firmly believe in equal opportunity dating, but I’m somewhat caught in no-man’s-land: Asians find me to be an oddity as they label me a ‘banana,’ and Americans have that cautious approach to me as if I’m something uniquely different. What can I say for living in the midwest?
Anyway, I plan to visit Taiwan in a year and half, so I figured it’d be nice to start dabbling on this site. =)

There are plenty of ABCs in Taipei, and plenty of westerners with ABC, almost ABC and Chinese friends. You’ll get in where you fit in as long as you go out and do things you are interested in.

Thanks! I’m not in Taiwan yet, but as soon as I can, I plan to visit Taipei. Right now I’m looking at a year out at least.
It’s better being Asian in the midwest than in Cali. In Cali Asians have some kind of weird subculture instead of being individuals. Oh yeah and it’s mostly old men on this site, it gets kind of depressing cause old people are depressing.

I am from Chicago and live in SF. There is an asian subculture in LA and a bit in the southern part of the Bay area, but the Bay area in general is super open and mixed racially. Trust me it is way better to be Asian in Cali than in the midwest.
