CCTV/Tannoy/Loudspeaker at the end of my street?

Hi guys,

Ive been living in Taipei for about 2 month now and have wondered for a while what the cctv/tannoy thing at the end of my street is used for. Anyway a announcement came over it today, loud as hell. Any idea what it was telling me?

That’s usually controlled by the local lizhang (head of your neighborhood). My lizhang likes to get on the announcement system about once a week and ramble on about one thing or another. But because he mumbles and has the echo turned way up it’s usually pretty much impossible to tell what exactly he’s saying … which I consider a blessing.

My advice: Just ignore it. If something really important to you is happening, you’d probably know anyway.

A lot of neighbourhoods have a neighbourhood leader (elected I believe). The blaring message was some sort of announcement, they range on what they are, but basically that is what it is and what it’s for.

Edit, same info as above!

Ok, Thank you.

Though the once a week notice is usually useless unless you want to participate in the local temple parade or something, it may be worth your while to ask your English Speaking neighbor for a quick summary.
In my neighborhood announcements include…

  1. Power cuts 2. Water Cuts 3. Last Day of Garbage Collection Before a Holiday or a Sanitation Engineer field trip (really… they actually have a class trip). 4. Where to pick up emergency supplies 5.Info on how to apply for compensation due to natural disasters…

Take note of any announcements given at odd times…

The Lizhang in my neighborhood makes announcements over the local PA system when, say, a typhoon is approaching.

By the way, for the benefit of those of us who don’t speak your particular dialect of English, what’s a “tannoy”?

Public address system. It’s actually a company name, but has become synonymous with the device in the same way as “hoover” has for “vacuum cleaner”, or, for Americans, “kleenex” meaning “tissue paper”.

If this were Facebook, I’d click “Like”!

Thanks everyone, a pink notice has now appeared on the door with 10/4 which I presume is a date and number 2 of 7 is circled, all the doors seem to have these with different numbers circled. Ill ask my landlord what all this activity is about lol.

That’s probably your natural gas meter form. You’re supposed to write in the digits from your gas meter so they can send you a bill.

That sounds like the notice to check the gas meter. If your apartment is circled you’re supposed to read the meter (probably on your back balcony) and fill it in. Nothing to do with the announcement probably.

Here is the notice for our gas meter this week. Our meter for the month of Dec reads “0005”. I figured over the years that we have lived here, we just passed 9999 last month. My wife thinks its because we order from UberEATS so much and do less cooking  so I circled the other possible UberEATS regulars.
