These are some of the changes I would like to see at Forumosa. Note, I’m guilty of some of these transgressions.
If a member claims to be a doctor or a lawyer or to have any other qualification that might boost his status or give credence to his posts, it should be verified by forumosa officials at their offices and displayed in his/her profile. Why? If a poster tells me something that might change my life drastically, I want to know with a measure of certainty that he/she is indeed who he/she claims to be. There could be a disclaimer to protect forumosa from those who need an extra buck.
The number of views of a certain post can be very deceptive. If I used a very enticing but misleading title, I could attract many other posters to view my empty, meaningless posts. Not to say that there is no place for some levity.Instead of showing the number of views, I suggest be give the posters some voting power to indicate whether they found the post helpful (or appropriate) or not. If a certain thread gets a certain number of thumbs-down, it doesn’t get floundered, it gets deleted. It could do wonders for forumosa’s credibility.
The number of votes in ones favor, should then give you more status than a novice or troll. The more status you build up, the more privileges you get. Spell check functions would be nice.
There should be forumosa events in each and every city or town where there are enough members to make it viable. Taipei gets too much attention, the other 75% gets left in the cold.
Posts that correct spelling or grammar should be deleted immediately. The only reason posters do that is to embarras other posters. The PM function is there to deal with private issues.
Moderators should take care to be unbiased/unprejudiced/impartial. Sometimes I get the feeling it’s cool to say something in favor of a certain country/party/religion, etc. but if one were to say the same of another, you would be lambasted.
If a person edits his/her post, the changes should be shown in a different color. The date/s on which the changes were made should also appear in the edited post. Edited posts should also be shown as new posts, because new material might have been added.
There has to be a jokes forum. If there were one, people wouldn’t mess up good threads. We need a place where we can talk as much rubbish as possible to get it out of our systems.

It’s really up to those people living elsewhere to get off their asses and tap out an event posting for a gathering in their area.
I have done just that for the Taoyuan area and have met some great people, so get into it if you feel you are getting left out in the cold.

I respectfully disagree Trublue
I think we should get a bus and do the whole island, bringing our wacky show on the road. I mean, hell, some Taiwanese show has old people from the countryside jumping through fucking holes every sat night…we could do better than that!
“Make Sandman say something mean to you” game…all you gotta do is talk…
Did you pay for such advice? Is there some reason why you can’t check another source to verify that such (free) advice is accurate? If you are one who takes advice from anyone (regardless of whether or not he claims to be a lawyer, doctor, etc.) on the internet without verifying it elsewhere, then that is your problem, not Forumosa’s.

The administrators of Forumosa live in Taibei and have jobs. It’s up to individual posters to plan activites outside of Taibei if they would like to meet other posters. You get as much out of Forumosa as you put into it.
Truant is a prime example of an active Happy Hour organizer outside of Taibei City.
Currently we have the Sports, Fun and Games Forum AND the Flounder Forum for this.
Keiththehessite, this is a serious thread, right? This belongs in the Feedback Forum. I’ll move it.
Since when has this been allowed? I’m outraged! Don’t we pay them enough? I would have thought that it would be in their contracts that they can’t seek outside work without permission. I think full disclosure is required here. Maoman and all the other mods owe it to the common Forumosan to disclose all assets and sources of income so that we can judge whether or not their interests run counter to those of Forumosa.

Yep, and if you let us know your happy hour details, I’ll do my best to run an announcement “above the line” (top margins)
Send details to adminYOURPANTS@forumosa.com (don’t forget to remove YOURPANTS -
always wanted to use that line
)

How do the guys in Taipei normally organize such an event? I suppose you have to talk to the manager of the venue first to get the go-ahead or isn’t it normally necessary?

Yes, we do talk to them, but only to ask for a drink special for Forumosans
But it doesn’t seem like we really need to get any go-ahead from them to get together. What would they say, “no, we do not want your large group of regulars to eat and drink here”?
Naturally, it’s a different story if you want them to do something special - like if you want to set up a table outside or upfront to collect fees or distribute name tags (neither of which we ever do in the Taipei Happy Hour)
Like the rest of Forumosa, Happy Hours ideas are open to suggestion
Verified by forumosa officials (that means the admins I guess)? Not really practical and not really necessary IMHO - while people here are trying to help I doubt any doctor or lawyer will take responsibility for this statement if things go wrong. In the end people give mostly their opinion, not any legally binding advise, and it’s your choice to take it as definite answer - or in addition seek professional advise outside where you pay good bucks for it and have the option of holding them responsible if things go wrong.
For 2. I think we had such a system before but I don’t think it’s helpful - if there is a good thread and nobody votes it might be overlooked.
Sure, posts with lot’s of hits or a catchy title attract more attention, but often the first few posts will tell you if it’s helpful or just drivel.
How do you obtain status? From your time around, from the number of posts? Voting by others?
Not sure that 75% are living outside (not aware of any such statistics), but anyone can organize an event.
Movie club and game club for example, though in Taipei, are not forumosa official events but organized by individuals of forumosa. Nothing stops you from doing the same in other places, it’s up to you.
Agree.
I believe the rules cover this, although differently from your suggestion.
Tracing changes as you suggest could make a post pretty messy.
Jokes go into the Sports, Fun and Games forum - and rubbish into the bin.

3. How do you obtain status? From your time around, from the number of posts? Voting by others?[/quote]
Yes, other members vote in favor of every good post made and all the votes accumulate to give you an aggregate. Once you have reached a certain ammount of points within a certain period, you eat a cherry (like in pacman).
Can I add an idea for some additional statuses (sattusii? English teacher please)?
1960 - 1969 posts Woodstock Toker
1970 - 1979 posts Rock God
1980 - 1989 posts Pop Idol
1990 - 2000 Warehouse Raver
2000 - 2010 ? Has there been a dominant musical force I should know about?
