Can anyone recommend a nice, cheap hotel / hostel in Taipei for 2 days?
It doesn’t have to be in the heart of Taipei, just as long as its close to a MRT station. Thanks
Yes. Try the Shin Her Hotel right next to the southeast Kuting MRT exit (near stinking Starbucks). There is an internet cafe (well, 2), a convenience store, noodle shop, and even a tailor near there. The hotel charges 1000 per night for short stays and gives discounts for longer stays (more than a 6 nights).
The number is: 02-2366-0105
I don’t recall the address, but walk between MRT exits 3 and 4 and look for a red and white sign that reads “Hotel 2F”. The staff only speaks Mandarin, Taiwanese and Klingon.
My guests in Taipei have been happy with them.
“Official” (IYHF associate) youth hostel - 12th Floor, Asiaworld Building (Daya Baihuo), No. 50, Zhongxiao West Road. It’s the building next to the very tall building (Shinkong Mitsukoshi), just opposite Taibei Railway Station. Bed in single-sex dorm room is NT$390. You need to have or get IYHF membership, also about NT$350 valid all over the world for one year. Actually, they also offer a rate of NT$490 for non-members, which they are not supposed to do according to IYHF rules. The rooms were quite clean and ship-shape back in the days when I was the hostel manager. It’s had its ups and downs since then - I can’t vouch for its current condition. To book, call 02-2311 5067 - They do speak enough English to deal with the booking.
Update 29 May 2004:
The IYHF hostel has been completely reconstructed and is now located on the 13th floor of the same building. The charge has gone up to NT$490 for YH card holders. If you have no card, you have to pay an extra NT$150 to buy a welcome stamp for the first 6 nights. When you have bought 6 welcome stamps, you will be a member and don’t have to buy any more at any hostel in the world until one year after you bought your first stamp.
The phone number for the new hostel is 02-2388 0885, fax 02-6632 9288, e-mail: yh_taipei01SNIPTHISBITOUT@yaSNIPTHISBITOUThoo.com.tw
Location of CTYHA Asiaworld Hostel - 13th floor
Other well-known hostels are Happy Family, Formosa, Amigo and the newly-established Fortuna Hostel just off Dingzhou Road in the Shida/Taida/Gonguan area. The Taipei Hostel in Linsen North Road does not have a very good reputation. If anyone thinks these comments are outdated, please go ahead and correct me. All China Youth Corps hostels also now recognise IYHF membership, including the Jiantan/Chientan Youth Activity Centre in Shilin.

Just go to any nearby love hotel and check in for the night. Prices range from around NT$500 to NT$950 for the revolving bed with whirlpool bath set up. Most are quiet and near MRT stations.
A friend is coming to teach in Taipei and as he doesn’t have much money to pay the appartment deposits - he thinks he will have the option of staying at a hostel.
Can anyone please say a few words of a hostel you know which might be: cheap, nice, well-located, etc.
Thanks.
P.S. And what is “Cai Niao” anyway?
Cai Niao means greenhorn.
Avoid Taipei Hostel it it’s still around. I slept under a tin roof on an August night the first day I spent in Taipei.
My friends stayed at Happy Family II on Zhongshan N. Rd. and it was pretty good as hostels go. The price was right and the owner was a decent Joe. This was over 5 years ago but I stopped in there a couple of times last year and things still seemed the same. They should be in the Lonely Planet book. I actually called ahead before I came to Taiwan and the owner (whose name escapes me for the moment; Mr. Lee? Bill Lee? Maybe.) kept my reservation. My friends became part-time managers for a short while for him in exchange for rent and it worked out pretty well. If you can
The Taipei Hostel behind Shandao Temple Station isn’t too bad in the dorms. It’s a great place to meet people and pick up info about jobs, visas, and other stuff you may think you got figured out. Absolutely, positively aviod the Happy (disfunctional) Family Hostel near the Main Station. It’s run by a neurotic little fellow who argues, insults anyone he doesn’t like. At Taipei Hostel the staff is alright, it could get hot up on the roof top where the single rooms are. Dorms are relatively clean.
GUYS, I need some info about cheap but nice&clean hotel/hostel near to NTNU at Heping E road sec.1
Price about TWD 1.000/night or less
Their address & phone no. if possible
Thank you guys!!!
The Fortuna Hostel. It’s right by the Taipower Building MRT Stop, close to Shi-Da. Probably the nicest hostel in Taipei. I take that back, it is the nicest. Doesn’t really even deserve to be called a hostel, more like a nice apartment flat. Dorm is NT250, double room is NT350 and a single is NT600.
Hi all,
I will be arriving in Taipei on Wednesday and the hostel I e-mailed to make reservations at doesn’t seem like its going to respond to me.
Can anyone recommend a hotel/hostel that is:
- Under $60 CND/ $45 USD
- Near the subway system
- Straightforward to get to from the airport
where I might be able to stay for the first few days while I get myself grounded.
Thanks so much,
John
I have done the search too, but maybe some informations are a bit outdated.

Hey guys,
I’m coming to taipei 6/10, need a place to stay. I’m a college student, looking for a descent/CLEAN/nice location hostel. Found these:
- Fortuna
- Amigo
- Happy Family II
- Taipei Hostel
- World Scholar House
Which one???
(hoping to pay NT$250-300 a night)
Thanks guys!!!
I stayed at Amigo when I first came 2 years ago. It’s simply a family’s apartment with a few rooms put aside for foreigners. I think I was paying 300 per night. The guy Micheal is an amusing chap and is very friendly. The facilities are very basic; My room had a thin plywood wall and some nights his daughters flute playing went on until about 2am. Having said that, I would much rather stay there than at the Taipei Hostel, a lot of REJECTS go throught that place, there are often fights and thefts. I say this based upon recent encounters with people who are currently staying there. Most of the people who stay at Amigo are from Korea, Japan, and other Asian countries.
i don’t know if this helps, but i’m staying at international house of taipei starting on the 30th. i went to visit and its clean and there’s air conditioning. for a double its NT$385/night or NT$6,600/month. for a single its NT$440/night or $8,800/month. i don’t think they have any singles available at the moment though (i was put on the waiting list or something)
Cross Happy Family off of the list.
:offtopic:
Well, not in Taipei but if you are ever in Tienshang, I found the CYC Hostel to be quite nice.

I was here in May 2004. 250 nt per night in 4 bed dorm, only 1 other person in there with me. Full kitchen, spotless is an understatement. Great f***** location! What more can you ask for really!Go GO Go!
Taipei Hostel is not recommended?? Oh no… I was planning to stay there… now I read all these bad posts about them…
In October 2001 I stayed two nights at the Queen Hotel in Taipei. I think a single cost about USD 30 a night. I don’t know how much the price was helped by the fact that I was being shepherded by my brother, who is fluent in Mandarin.
Clean quiet room, TV, hot water bathroom, western style toilet. Bed was pad-on-a-slab.
The Queen Hotel is about half a kilometer NW of Taipei Railway Station.
From the northwest corner of the station go north on Chengde Rd. Then turn left and go west on Chang’an West Rd. Hotel is on southeast corner of Chang’an West Rd and Chongqing North Rd. It’s across the street from a 7-11.
You may want to bring a print of the following picture which shows name of the hotel in Mandarin.

For no known reason it seems that when I try to connect to it from this page I get a message from Yahoo that it doesn’t exist. And yet when I copy and past I can get to the picture.
