Jeez, I am trying to tell you that Alishan is not a national park. It’s either a national scenic area (the large one), or a national forest recreation area (the popular forest area inside the large one). Alishan is part of the central mountains, there are some designated scenic spots and the National Park. Altogether if you wanted to spend time visiting all of these areas you need several days to explore. This is part of the range where I live… in Alishan but I am an hour away from the National Park. All shots within 20 mins drive from my home on the roads to and from my home. Drone shot taken by launching from a part of the range looking down over the valley where I live. This is from Shan Mei which is around which is at a lower part of the range not far from Chiayi City. Less applicable to Kending and Yangmingshan among others, I think. That’s the only really practical difference it makes to my life. ---

I just want to avoid confusion. If someone talks about Alishan National Park, people won’t be sure which area is actually meant. It’s like using “the United Provinces of America.” People will start wondering what is meant. ---

Looking to visit Alisha Nat’l Forest Rec Area this summer and having trouble finding a decent place to stay with my family for 2 nights. We have stayed in minsu’s in Taiwan before, but most along Hwy 18 seem old and rundown. Since our father is joining us, we will need 2 bedrooms for our stay, and we be renting a car. Our budget is under $150 per night per room, or $300 if multiple rooms/entire property. Can’t seem to find a middle ground between a minsu and Hotel Indigo/Alishan Hotel. Just looking for something clean, modern, and a view would be great. We have also considered staying in Chiayi but it’s close to a 2 hour drive both ways and we plan to go hiking 2 days. Some years ago (pre COVID emergency) I had a great time staying at this B&B in Fenqihu. It’s located on a tea farm and these people really know the area—me and my friend really enjoyed the foods and drinks they showed us as well as the hikes and walks in the area. No idea if availability or budget will line up with your needs, but if circumstances make it possible I would stay there again in a flash. Thanks for the rec. Small-Swiss minsu. It looks a bit dated but the grounds look great right on a tea plantation. We ended up booking Fenchihu Hotel that have Japanese style tatami rooms. ---
