Yep. This is sure to convince Taiwanese that China is a reliable and helpful ‘family member’.
Chinese Strategy: Beat with stick until you get results you want. That’s NEVER backfired before.

Taiwan should look towards promoting tourism to Australia and New Zealand. I think this is the correct move, I know they’ve been targeting SE Asian countries and Muslims countries. But I think they’re missing out on Australia and New Zealand.
For those not in the know. A Chinese person living in China has to get permission twice. Once from Communist authorities in a passport-style booklet or card, similar to the Taiwan Compatriot Pass. The other is the actual entry permit issued by the Taiwanese Government. The former was banned.
This doesnt affect Chinese citizens if they are outside China as they can just use the entry permit to go into Taiwan as the airlines will happily oblige them.
More hotel rooms and cheaper rates for other travelers.
Taiwan could also consider incentives for travel agencies and airlines to transport tourists from USA and Europe.
But I mean, Australia and New Zealand are the best option imo. They are relatively wealthy and they don’t have many options close to them.
US and Europe has so many options, hard to see them coming to Taiwan in large numbers. I just don’t see many Europeans coming to Taiwan for tourism tbh.
Taiwan has the potential. I just wish they didn’t destroy old neighborhoods and buildings and replace them with gigantic ugly concrete boxes. People aren’t going to come here just to go to malls and taipei 101. They can do that in so many other places.
I think that part of it has to do with the old mentality of letting whoever is in charge make all decisions without acknowledging that they probably know nothing about the issues. Since they are the ones in charge, they decide what is best for everyone. Idiots. I this this kind of stupid behavior at work all the time.
It’s obvious they are setting things up for Han Guo Yu.
Actually three times. First is to get the pink passport like book. Second is to get a visa like travel permit in said book, and the third is the ROC entry permit printed on a separate piece of paper.
The permits are still being issued. What is discontinued are permits for the purpose of independent tourism, which were never available to the majority of Chinese Citizens in the first place. There is no effect on Chinese citizens in Taiwan for study, residency, business, vist family etc.
Why are they doing this. Probably because elections coming up, Hong Kong unrest and to show disapproval of DPP and Tsai.
No doubt if KMT win in the elections the policy will be reversed as part of a package of warming relations. If DPP win it might come back later and more quietly.
Thank you for the clarification.
I edited the tile, as China has not “Banned citizens from individual travel to Taiwan”
Good riddance. At least places like Sun Moon Lake and Mt Alishan can be more peaceful and better enjoyed by the citizens of Taiwan ROC. It would be best if 0 tourists came from Red China.
But Taiwan still has those willing to sell their freedom for a buck. That’s worrying. They will likely lose their minds and demand concessions. Which is exactly what Communist Beijing wants.
The independent travel ones were the well behaved ones that you didn’t even notice.
Fair point. But English Tsai should just ban all visitors from Red China. If only she had the guts to do so. And ban all imports from Red China and cancel ECFA and ban all direct flights from Red China at the same time. It would be a master stroke.
Three our of my four family members living in Taiwan are PRC citizens, so I am not going to agree with you on that. ![]()
The relationship between ROC and PRC can not be like that. They are (one) China.
And declare bankruptcy at the same time, with thousands of factories closing and millions unemployed. A sure fire tactic for re-election. ![]()
That’s true.
And I notice HK Cantonese people actually being some of the more obnoxious in terms of noise making.
Cantonese is an interesting dialect to say the least. I’ve come across many Cantonese speaking to each other and always thought they were in a big shouting match, screaming at the top of their lungs. Then they always tell me that’s just the way the speak and its totally normal.
