China defeats Chinese Taipei
Why ac-dropout mentions basketball is beyond me.

Basketball is a tall man’s game. East Asians will never be world champions in basketball because of the height factor.
Even China is a basketball laggard when faced with American and European teams.

Baseball on the other hand - any race / country can do well.

So ac-dropout, would you prefer to be:

  1. Asian basketball champion but perpetual World basketball loser… or
  2. World Baseball champion

And don’t mention Yao ming - He’s a once in a century accident of nature. You’ll have a billion Wang Zhi Zhi before you get another Yao Ming.
Because national sports programs are an extension of international politics.

For China yes. But why not mention baseball?

And you haven’t totally answered my question ===>>>

No particular reason…I’m just not a big fan of baseball, so wasn’t following it.

What a bizarre, meaningless question. I assume you have some intent here, I just can’t quite figure out what it is.

Why can’t we be both?

Coming from the likes of you, why am I not surprised?

Why can’t we be both?

Now this is a bizarre question. Care to read and understand the entire thread?
I tried. I still don’t understand it.

I can’t figure out how the question of whether Asia will ever feature a world champion basketball team forces you to question ac_dropout whether he would prefer a world champion baseball team, or an Asian champion basketball team. I just don’t get it. Easy simple words, since you’re obviously at a higher level of consciousness than I. What are you trying to say?

Furthermore, I’m not as optimistic as LA, and I won’t predict whether an Asian team will “ever” be world champions in basketball… but you certainly to have minimal knowledge about the game of basketball and Asia.

First, you made the concrete statement that Asian teams wouldn’t have the height advantage. Recent top finishers in world basketball championships + Olympics since 2000:

  • Spain, Greece, Yugoslavia, Argentina, Italy.

The population of these nations aren’t exactly recognized has having a “height” advantage; for some reason, the Nordic nations aren’t taking advantage of their “height”. Furthermore, none of these nations featured a dominant big man on any of those teams.

And by the way, I might also mention there are easily 50x more 7-footers in China than, say, the former Yugoslavia, Greece, Spain, Argentina, or Italy. Even if we were to accept the claim that the Chinese, on average, are shorter than the Greeks… hopefully you understand statistical distribution, and that China is very likely capable of fielding two tall players in the front-court.

Next, you apparently decided what you really meant to say was that Asian teams couldn’t be as “athletic”. As athletic as… what? Is the US basketball team really less athletic than the Greek or Italian versions? Bizarre.

I’ll be waiting for your helpful explanations of what you really meant to say, next.

OMFG… All right all ready… let this thread go and get on to bigger and better things… What was the original point of it anyway…? To have a rational sports discussion? Yeah, right…

Rounders and netball, for christ’s sake. It’s not even about sport, really. And at least in UK, the girlys that play these “sports” wear tight little navy blue gym pants.

Well it was either study that or concentrate on calculus during Monday double maths. Imagine putting a playing field next to a maths classroom!
Although I knew a great deal about schoolgirls and their gym pants, I managed to achieve just 6% in my maths prelims. So I blame pussy for my poor maths skills.

Me thinks that out of a population of 1.3 billion, the PRC will be able to find enough tall guys to fill out a basketball squad. Me also thinks that any of you lot who think there are no tall Chinese people have spent too much time in southern China (yes, that’s you people in Taiwan). If you’d go up north to Jilin, Heilongjiang or Liaoning, you would then see some pretty tall Chinese people.

In the UK, don’t they play a version of rounders wearing vests and collared shirts? And take 3-4 days to complete the game because they’re always taking breaks for tea?

In China, where the real men dwell, we sometimes throw boulders at each other. Just because we’re bored.

I’d also like to point out that we’re tall and athletic enough to have captured Jack Bauer.

China and Chinese Taipei to face off in the Women’s basketball gold medal match!

Big tall sweaty Chinese women making physical contact on the court fighting over a ball

I do hope for your sake you’re saying this because you haven’t seen what those big tall sweaty Chinese women look like. Or did I underestimate your impeccable taste for the weird, the bizarre, and the unexpected? :notworthy:
