Chinese display and input in XP after reinstall

I just reinstalled Windows and the Chinese language packs, but now, when I open an instant messenger, i.e. Msn or Yahoo, the little “E” or “CH” in the language bar in the toolbar just disappears. I can type Chinese in text windows like this one, but not for any chat programs. This is highly annoying since I have to open up a Word document, type my chatlines in there, and then cut and paste them into the chat window to chat in Chinese, which I often do. Also, many websites that showed Chinese before now do not. Is there something I’m missing?

Try this:

Control Panel
Regional and Language Options
Advanced

Language for non-unicode programs - Chinese (Taiwan).

Also, I noticed that with at least one of these language settings, it didn’t seem to stick unles I restarted straight away.

Tried that, and some of the websites now work in Chinese, but the chat programs, or clicking on anything outside of the browser, will cause the language bar to disappear if it’s activated, or the “EN” or “CH” to disappear from the toolbar.

Also, when I use Firefox it doesn’t show up. It only allows me to choose Chinese when I’m in IE or Word.

Have you tried the options in
Contorl Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Languages -> Details?
