Chinese Names for Movies

awesome!!! thanks a bunch man!!! :bravo:

Here’s a list of many movie titles; but it’s about ten years old now.

Another approach is to try entering the name in Wikipedia and then checking if there’s a Mandarin-language page that corresponds to the English one.

Did anyone ever come across a list for Chinese/Taiwanese movies with English and Chinese names (pinyin too, would be extra helpful)?
I could’ve sworn I posted something about this a long, long time ago. But I can’t find the thread, even with the search function. Hmm.

I saw that same list a long time ago. I searched my hard drive and found it.

I’ve modified it slightly to save some file space and put it on my site at www.romanization.com/misc/
The link brings me to a page that says “Taiwan Gov’t Fear of Pinyin”, but with nothing else, and no links.

EDIT: I just realized the original post was from 2004

Sorry 'bout that, Chris. The link in my second post – romanization.com/misc/movies.html – still works, but not the link in my first post. I’ve fixed it now. But 1997 is the most recent date on that list, which considerably limits its usefulness now.

Oops. I need to update my custom 404 page for my old site. The 404 page for pinyin.info – an homage to Talking Heads, of course – is basically the same but is more complete.

I would like to show some American movies in my classes, so I need to know the Chinese names of the movies because Blockbusters doesn’t have any record of the English names of American movies. (They used to, but not anymore.)

Is there a website in which I could input the English name of a movie and it would tell me the Chinese name?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

This one will do:
atmovies.com.tw/home/
Just type in the English title, and viola! Out comes the Chinese.

Incubus,

Thanks a lot! I tried that website and it works great!

I once got an e-mail that said “Dear Sir or Madman”

Dudes, I’m chumpin’ allaya:

Zenma Shuo: Chinese names of English Movies & TV Shows
zenmeshuomovies.com/

Vay,

Thanks for the website. But that website only shows the names of movies which are used in China, not Taiwan. For lots of movies, the name used in Taiwan is completely different than the name used in China, and a completely different name is often used in Hong Kong, too.

Another problem with that website is that it only shows simplified characters, but in Taiwan, only traditional characters are used.

But anyway, the website is very useful for movies in which the Chinese name is the same in both Taiwan and China, and to solve the simplified characters problem, I’m sure there are websites which let you input simplified characters and convert the text to traditional characters.

What’s a videotape store, grandpa? :eh:

I like the title for ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ - HoTian

Hey I gots me an idea? Hows about typing the name of the movie in google and then printing out the page showing the movie, then taking that page to the store? Maybe the girls can figure it out with that?

Its sorta like the old days going into a record store and humming out a tune?

Like:
imdb.com/title/tt0100405/

Chances are they may recognize it with that pic?

Or say:

imdb.com/title/tt0110357/

I tried the above web site and found that it doesn’t have everything one may want (Doctor Who etc. )
I’ve been here thirteen years and pulled my hair out trying to communicate with the video store ladies.

If it’s a popular movie, just print out the DVD cover or movie poster.
They’ll recognize it immediately.
And if you want to rent a movie the last minute, most small vid stores have the girls there browsing the web. Just ask them to let you get on and show them.

If you want to order a movie or if it’s obscure, just visit Yahoo.com.tw Type the movie name and DVD. More often than not, you’ll get the Chinese Name right there. If it’s mastered in Taiwan. The name will appear in Chinese and English. There are only about three or four studios that master all the region three dvds.

maybe this would help
app.atmovies.com.tw/atmdb/atmdb.

search alphabetically
