I am wondering if anyone has any good ideas of what to do in Taiwan for Chinese New Year. On www.tealit.com I have looked into the curises on the Superstar Gemini line and was wondering if anyone had taken them or how they are. I am looking for any ideas where I will experience something new. I would also like to go to the peng hu islands.
Not sure if you’ve been in Taiwan longer than on the forums, but here’s the very brief rundown. Maybe others can add.
Any part of Taiwan: Lots of people on the roads during CNY. Mostly heading from Taipei to the south of Taiwan in the beginning, and reverse at the end.
North part of Taiwan: Rainy and cold. Semi-secluded hotel or beach cabin on the north coast is a possibility. Staying in Taipei over CNY isn’t bad simply for enjoying things with less people around.
South part of Taiwan: Weather much better, but packed with people during the exact CNY week. However, I went down there just before the CNY last year and it was wonderful. Great weather, not crowded.
Nearby islands: Done lots of reading on Peng Hu, but haven’t been there. Assume it is a popular CNY destination. Been to Green Island and Xiao Liou Ciou (off Kaohsiung). Both were nice. GI has a reputation now for being overrun during CNY. Not sure about XLC, but its close proximity to Kaohsiung makes me think it would get some traffic. Orchid Island might be a good option. Far enough removed to reduce traffic, but harder to get to for you.
Other countries: Lots of people escape to these if possible. Airfare can be expensive and seats book early. Thailand, Phillipines, Aus, NZ, and others in the area are popular.
Lots of info on the forums about these topics, especially the Travel forum. Suggest you do some searching and come back with more questions if you like.
We are going to just work those days and take some other days off. I think we get less days off or something this year, though, because the holiday falls over the weekend. so ridiculous.
I am planning a motorcycle trip to Green Island this CNY. My question: What will traffic be like on the east coast? A few years back, I sat in the parking lot that is Ping Uh Gong Lu for 8 hours to travel the 100 or so kliks to Kenting. I really don’t want to experience that again. What about travelling at night at least for the Taipei-Ilan section? Okay, guess I have more than 1 question. Will GI really be packed? Was anyone there last year? Are there any campgrounds on the island?
Well … you could come to Sanxia … if I remember correct the 6th day after Chinese new years day we have the big pig contest and from the 3th or 4th day we have a 5-6 day ‘night market’ going on …
