Does anyone know where to buy the physical version of a Scrabble-like Chinese game? It’s been around for quite awhile – I had a set in the early 1990s in the States. It was sold at the “World Journal Bookstore” in those days. The tiles are divided into two sets (sold separately!): top half/bottom half and left/right halves, and there were various games, all of which involved making characters out of the halves. Lots of arguing with Chinese speakers during games but it was fun.

The game sets came in rather flimsy boxes about 4" x 8" or so, but I can’t remember the proper name for the game(s).

Ax had one (from HK, you can see it here home.kimo.com.tw/antonxie/cscrabble.html is it the one you were thinking of?) but believe me the new Chinese squabble which he designed (with help and playtesting from me, Miltownkid and others) is a lot better.

Yeah,

Brian said it right… It took me lots of sleepless nights to put this squabble card together, researching for radicals and meanings in Wenlin and Zhongwen.com. We beta-test it at Shuangyu cafe during our last game game club meetings. Lots of suggestion were floored, I picked them up and apply them to the card. The scoring system and the gin rummy game is basically the royalty of Sir Donald Bradman.

This game came up to mind one day when we played English squabble. Somebody (was it miltownkid?) in the group challenge if we can play squabble in Chinese. I gave it a thought and say…“Yes” the next time we meet, I brought them the prototype.

The prototype was sold to Douglas in one of our meeting. He and his girlfriend seemed to enjoy the game a lot.

You guys are amazing! Ax, big guanxi to ya. I think it’s great that you are putting your talent for languages into endeavours that can help so many of us. Thank you. I can’t wait to see what it looks like. Anyway, put me down for a set - we can complete the transaction at the next Happy Hour maybe?

Yes, the picture on the link you provided seems to be of the original game. Anyone know where it’s available? The thing is that the radicals there fit together visually, whereas Ax’s cards wouldn’t seem to (of course I haven’t seen it in action).

Ironlady,

The Chinese Scrabble you mentioned is available in HK. When I went to the bookshop where I bought it, I also saw the Left/Right combi version and the Idiom (Chengyu) version. I didn’t have much moolah back then, so I just picked up the Top/Bottom combi version.

It is interesting how people come up with great ideas and amazing how one determined person puts in all his effort to bring that idea into a reality.

This game test played by the same group of people who conceived the idea indeed sounds like an enjoyable way to learn Chinese. I think everybody who plans to learn Chinese should consider playing the Chinese Squabble. Easiest way to learn something is learning while you are having a great time.

I have revamped the website and translated it into many languages. If anyone is insterested in Squabble, you can view them in English, Chinese, and Japanese

ax

Anton, are you actually selling the English Squabble?

Brian

Not yet, but that’s not a bad IDEA
I’m gonna make them into languages…
But chinese is the premier
My Japanese and Korean is due out…

cheers

Any idea on how to market Chinese Squabble?
I’ve been trying to post on many chinese forums. So far, it has not been selling like hot cakes…
can anyone help?

ax

I think this game is an awesome idea!

One of the major audiences would be of course those that are learning chinese. Children and adult could benefit so much from playing this game!

If your target market is children then maybe set up shop at the Children’s festival that’s being held now. Don’t know much. Just saw it on the MTR baards.

I guess that kind of stand must be very expensive for my budget.
this is just home industry. I just wish to get all the publication I can, get on magazines, radio, or tv

I’ll go peddling in Taipei Mainstation if I have to
