A new adult school just opened a couple months ago on Nanjing E. Rd. Sec. 2, called City’s English. I’m going to interview with them on Monday and am wondering if anybody here knows something about the place. They say they have another branch down in Kaoshuing.
For anybody who is interested, City’s English offers:
580NT/hour. Hours available M-Th 10am-noon, 6:30-8:00pm/8:10-10:00pm, and Sat. 2-5p.m. Only 3 foreigners working there now and students are given the “Ideas and Issues” book. Chinese teachers teach City’s English own published series.
They don’t offer one-on-one classes, but group classes up to four students max, so cancellations are difficult for the students. If the students do cancel, they’re allowed only 2 chances, and after that, the teacher gets paid for any following cancellations.
NOTE: They are still wrestling with government paperwork and won’t be able to offer work permit/ARC until after next Chinese New Year.
They have a branch down in Kaoshuing that has been open for 7 years (that school offers work permit/ARC). The owner’s brother is here in Taipei managing their office on Nanjing E. Rd. Sec. 2, but the supervisor that teachers’ would deal with is a lady named Isis who impressed me as sincere and straightforward about what this school can and cannot offer. They’ve only been open here in Taipei since June, and their office looks pretty nice, clean, new, professional.
Maybe next year they’d be worth looking at again.
So who’s going to be working there if this school doesn’t offer work permits to teachers? With all the noise coming out about school raids in the Taipei area, one really needs to be careful about the risks and rewards.
Risk is deportation for $580/hour part time work. Hm.
