Classic Rock

Do you ever listen to true classic rock any more? I’m not talking early Madonna, Duran Duran, or the Cars. I’m talking real classics that have been played more on vinyl than CD (for those old enough to remember vinyl).

Most of the classic albums in my collection haven’t been played for years, even the ones I bought on CD when I first started my CD collection, thinking they should be cornerstones of my collection. But, for some reason, I just pulled out a couple of old Stones albums: Sticky Fingers and Let it Bleed.

It’s an odd experience. First, they seem so incredibly lean. Simple drum beat, a couple of guitars and vocals. Maybe some horns or keyboards on a song, but that’s it. Truly simple music. I’m no musical expert, but modern music seems so much fuller, richer, a lot more stuff going on. Back then it was just music with blank spaces between the beats. Today music is dense. I don’t know if that makes sense, but if you pull out an old album like that and play it I think you’ll know what I’m saying.

But regardless of that, it’s really impressive how great that music was. Mick was a genius, ahead of his time. That music was over 35 years ago, half the posters on this forum probably weren’t even born yet, but the music is still great. Sticky Fingers is loaded with classic hits including:

Brown Sugar
Wild Horses
Can’t You Hear Me Knocking
Sister Morphine

Let it Bleed includes the following (among others):

Gimmie Shelter
Love in Vain
Let It Bleed
Midnight Rambler
You Got the Silver
Monkey Man (my favorite) and of course. . .
You Can’t Always Get What You Want

Man, they just don’t make albums like that any more. Just try to think of an artist today who writes so many songs that are so memorable. I can’t. Anyway, it’s nice taking this trip down memory lane, but for some reason I suspect these oldies will go back on the shelf for a while before I’m tempted to pull them out again.

My favorite was Get Yer Ya Yas Out. Sticky fingers belongs in the classic album cover thread though. It’s all good.
Classic rock is about all there is for me. I hardly ever listen to anything new. (I know there’s good stuff out there too.) When CDs came out I ended up buying a lot of “the best of” CDs in order to save money. Now I’m into collecting DVDs of concerts and stuff and it’s all old.
I read recently that the Concert for Bangladesh is going to be rereleased next month. That’s one to get. You can see the original movie poster on the wall at Carnegeis.

Let it Bleed and Sticky Fingers? Classic rock?

“Classic rock” is crap like Kansas and Boston and all that other mid-America crap.

The best Stones stuff is only rock and roll. I saw a DVD just the other night that had Wild Horses on the soundtrack. Made me cry, just like it always has.

The hell with that…I’m listening to the Stones right now. :sunglasses:

Yes, another motherlode:

Jumpin’ Jack Flash
Carol
Stray Cat Blues
Love In Vain
Midnight Rambler
Sympathy For The Devil
Live With Me
Little Queenie
Honky Tonk Woman
Street Fighting Man

I remember seeing them in concert and thinking what a huge repertoire of well-known hits they had to choose from. They could play for a week straight with every song being a top 10 hit. But, Richard, do you ever listen to any albums that old any more? They served their purpose in the history of music, but is their time up?

Edit: oops, I see you edited, Richard, while I was posting. never mind.

My favorite part of Get Yer Ya Yas Out is during Midnite Rambler…some stoner is screaming “Goddamn!” loud enough to be heard over Mick.

Crazy-man talk. Crazy-man!
There’s a simple test you can do: check to see if your balls draw up towards your body when you play the music. They do? Then it’s time is far from up.

Mary Clayton wailing on Gimme Shelter…Jesus Christ what a voice! And the guitar work on Monkey Man…

A kickass album. :bravo: :bravo: :bravo:

Yea, I guess so. But that’s only because idiot DJs have been calling that garbage “Classsssic RoKKK” for the past 10 or 20 years.

Side note: I was listening to the radio once and the DJ said, “Northern California’s best rock,” immediately before putting on a song by Billy Squires or some other lame '80s artist. So I called the station and asked the DJ, “you don’t honestly believe that is No. Cal’s best rock, do you?” and he replied that, no, he didn’t, but the average listener is 13 years old and they play for them.

Anyway, you’re right, the RS were just Rock and Roll and their claim to being the World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band was not just an empty boast. Only a handful of bands have ever put out as many great hits as them.

What I hate is buying CDs of albums that I used to have. Or even worse buying CDs of CDs that I used to have. The only Stones CD I have is a greatest hits one and it leaves a whole bunch of stuff off. There’s a big box set of Rolling Stones in concert in the stores now, but I’d rather have some older stuff. I saw one off the Internet called Rock and Roll Circus that’s really good. It looks like about 1969. It also has Jethro Tull and John Lennon. I will snatch that up if I ever see it for sale here.

Heh! I’ll post a listing of my Stones records tomorrow, just to make you jealous Richard. I think I have around 30 or so, including everything they recorded in the sixties apart from Hot Rocks 1964.

So MT was right. There’s no way you can listen to them all.

Damn! That must be doing a number on your balls!

Ernie Watts. I think he’s the sixth Stone.

“Live With Me” (I think that’s the title) from “Let It Bleed” is pretty cool. The bass is cool in the begining and the sax is awesome.

I’ve got nasty habits
I take tea at three
Yes and the meat I eat for dinner
Must be hung up for a week
My best friend, he shoots water rats
And feeds 'em to his geese
Don’t you think there’s a place for you
In between the sheets

Come on now honey
We can build a home for three
Come on now honey
Don’t you wanna live with me

etc. (don’t know if I got the lyrics all right)

The Stones rock

As evidence of their enduring power, just today in the NYT the title and first line of Maureen Dowd’s column come from the Stones:

Does anyone think news columnists will be quoting from Moby 40 years from now?

But I didn’t mean for this thread to focus solely on the Stones. There were other great (classic?) R&R acts: the Beatles, the Who, Led Zepellin, Pink Floyd, etc.

I believe more people saw the Grateful Dead in concert than any other band, or they earned the most concert revenue. But who had the most #1 hits, most top 10 hits, most weeks on the charts, etc? I’m guessing that Elvis and the Beatles held a few such records, but I don’t know.

Duke Ellington once said there are two types of music, good and bad. I couldn’t agree more.

Music, know matter how old, or where it’s from or whatever musical genre it comes out of is such a powerful force when it is presented by musicians and artists whose sole purpose is to rock you and transend the musical form they are presenting that it’s essence is something that can’t be faked, copied or emulated. When a track comes along and sonically hit’s you like a sledgehammer you know then and there what is in front of you. Music like that is classic for sure! Because that kind of beauty, rawness and sound is something that lasts forever!

Do I listen to classic rock? Hell’s yeah I do and then some! Everything I groove to is a classic.
Peace

That’s one great live album.

I’m very fortunate to have a classic rock satellite radio channel with no DJ’s so it’s just straight music.

I can record it but I’ve been slack cause all I have to do is let it rock.

I’m by no means old enough to be fully able to appreciate the difference, but I know what you mean - I’ve thought the same thing about modern music, particularly rock. That’s one of the reasons I’m a big fan of The White Stripes.

I know what you mean. I had Bell Express View back in Canada and the music stations were just great. The modern ones were especially good. Rockin’ Once in a while though… Some shit. Ones with the stones though could have been mixed with shit but anyway. Satelite rules! I’m gettin’ here in Korea when I move next month. More to get NFL.
