Col. Nathan Jessup would be pissed off about this!

This just in – the Gitmo base commander has just been sacked. The news reports are unclear on this, so it is not sure whether it was because he couldn’t tell who had the extra key necessary for stealing the canned strawberries or if it was because of one too many “code reds” on his watch.
Capt. Leslie J. McCoy, who had commanded Guantanamo since March 2003, was the subject of an investigation into inappropriate personnel and administrative practices unrelated to the base’s detention camp for suspected terrorists.

“His release and reassignment are in no way related to the detainee operations taking place in Guantanamo,” said C. Patrick Dooling, spokesman for Navy Region Southeast, based in Jacksonville, Fla. Dooling would not elaborate on the allegations against the officer.

McCoy was relieved of his duties Saturday by Rear Adm. Annette E. Brown, the region commander, who had “lost confidence in his ability to effectively lead,” Dooling said.
In Bushian newspeak, this would normally mean that McCoy’s dismissal was directly tied to his handling of Gitmo detainees.

Time to put on his full dress uniform and pull out his service pistol

I can just imagine the movie:
You want the truth?? You can’t handle the truth.

Son, we live in a world that has secret prisons. And those prisons have to be guarded by men with guns. Who’s gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for the loss of civil rights within the United States, and you curse Bush, Ashcroft and Gonzalez for trying to put the Executive Branch above the law. You have that luxury until we decide to take it away from you. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: That all those unexplained deaths of detainees, while tragic, probably contribute to the continuing animosity and suspicion that fuels the anti-American hatred of these guys. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, costs lives.

You don’t want the truth. Because deep down, in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want me “getting even” with Muslims. Some little, petty childish place, where you like the idea of cheap “payback” despite the overall need for us to collect accurate intelligence, despite the need for us to improve our image overseas, despite the fact that this is a war of ideas. In that little childish part of your soul, you like me abusing prisoners.
I think the role should be filled by Ned Beatty.

As an ex military man, what this means to me is that the “goat” has been chosen.

You’re probably exactly right on that score.
