Colliding With Death at 37,000 Feet, and Living

This story is a good read – it’s about the passengers on the smaller plane that hit the larger Boeing over the Amazon the other day.

:astonished:

Wow, can we get the movie rights?

Amazing but awful at the same time. Pretty unbelievable.

Sounds to me like someone in ATC made a boo-boo. If I remember IFR rules (not that I’m supposed to btw) then they should have had at least 2,000’ of vertical separation, since they were flying in opposite directions:

Track 000 to 179° - odd flight levels (FL 290, 330, 370, etc.)
Track 180 to 359° - odd flight levels (FL 310, 350, 390, etc.)

Scary. Very scary.

They (the pilots) of both aeroplanes should have had TACAS, the collision avoidance system. I wonder why none of them were using it.
