Computer Stupidities

Something I “stumbled” across that made my day (don’t want to feel like it is only me that get these questions/answers).

That site is the perfect illustration of why I’m convinced the human race as a whole is too blindingly stupid to survive.

Actually, it reminds me of a guy in one of my computing classes back in high school. He wasn’t exactly the sharpest pencil in the case to start with; I think they stuck him in the computing course so he could be kept amused by the pretty flashing lights on the screen or something. Anyway, one day, about halfway through the term, we all make our way into class, sit down, and get to work. About half an hour into the class, this guy is still sitting in front of a blank screen, with an almost equally blank look on his face. Then he finally gets an idea (I’ll bet he’s still recovering from the effort of that today) and calls the teacher over.

“Sir, my computer’s broke!”

So the teacher reaches over and taps the space bar, deactivating the screen saver, sighs, and walks off.

Exactly. Sometimes it is quite frightening to see powerful tools in the hands of (can I use it here?) IDIOTS!

I get that sort of thing everyday. I have diligently kept a work folder called “Idiot Award” winners. One of these days I will publish them. Here’s a sample Idiot award winner.

Luser: The new (external) hard disk isn’t working! We have no more space on our server. Please help.
Me: Um, is it turned on?
Luser: Yes it is.
Me: Do you see any blinking lights in the case?
Luser: No.
Me: Well, that’s why the HD isn’t working. It’s not turned on.
Luser: I did what you told me (which of course is almost never true).
Me: Turn on the external HD.
Luser: how?
Me: Do you see a button switch in the back of the case? Click it.
Luser: I did but no lights
Me: Did you plug the electrical cable in?
Luser: Let me check

<after jiggling it, power magically appears>
Luser: Yes, there’s lights now on the HD!
Me: Ok, check if your computer can see the new HD (it’s a previously mapped network drive)

Luser: Yes! Thanks so much for your help!

God, h-a-t-e-s me. :wall: :wall:

I love hearing that “I did what you told me”. Or the no, no, no, nothing, no, no, oh, wait a minute, yeah - oh, it’s working now. :loco:
