Condolences?

My officemate’s dad recently passed away. I’ve been told that I am not supposed to do anything, even give my condolences. Have you heard differently?

send him a clock as a present

…only joking.

Best thing to do is nothing. Death is not somthing to talk of here. or even something that should be associated with seemingly-harmless stuff (e…g like clocks…).

say and do nothing.

Trapper

Very strange. What a weird people the Chinese are.

On a related note, whenever I pass a funeral with my wife, either walking or driving, she tells me not to look at it or speak of it and she covers our baby’s ears so she won’t hear the funeral music. I have a copy of Mozart’s Requiem at home, but my wife won’t let me play that either. :s

My grandmother in law passed away last year early in Ghost Month so they had to leave her out until the end of Ghost Month so she wouldn’t be buried at an unlucky time. We couldn’t let our daughter go to any of the funeral events so we had to make special arrangements to make sure she was taken care of and not be exposed to any of the mourning. Then after we left grandmother at the crematorium we had to leave and pretend like nothing had happened, and not allowed to think of it again until Tomb Sweeping Day. It was kind of disappointing because we had not yet taken our daughter to see her great-grandmother yet, and we had to wait until next Tomb Sweeping Day to show her our daughter. I can kind of understand the rationale about not wanting to have people get stuck in a rut of mourning, but you alse have to be realistic about some things. I guess mostly I thought that I wanted some closure by introducing our daughter which we had regretably not been able to do before she died.

My Taiwan-wife’s dad just passed away

Do Nuttin’. The girl is scared, her dad’s ghost may stay somewhere where she goes bothering the people there. My wife was almost ashame for her “ghost on the run” and we had to move later into our new apartment, because dead dad could otherwise move in with us.

Beeeeecause he needs some time until the end of the funeral procedures to find the other world. Right.

Just done it all before. Peeeeh, that was work. In the end I thought I saw her old man standing next to us in the cementry. I had bought so many cookies for him and learned more about what he likes and not likes than in his life!

Don’t mention it! Do not wear red! Red it the color of happiness and luck and this would be an offense. I was prohibided even red underwear…
