Are there any alternative translations to
召集人
other than the Chinglish-sounding word “convener”?
It seems that this is a position I often encounter in Chinese writing, but I have no idea what the equivalent position in an organization in an English-speaking country would be. I’ve never heard the word “convener” outside of a Chinese context.
Any insights from you Chinese gurus out there?

Well, the convener is one who convenes a meeting or conference, but ‘convener’ isn’t very common nowadays. If it’s an organization putting together a conference, use held, sponsored, or organized. If it’s an individual who coordinates things, ‘coordinator’.

Why is convener Chinglish-sounding? In fact, I just received an e-mail from the local Little League convener on registering kids for the upcoming baseball season. Seems like pretty normal usage to me.
It’s not Chinglish. It’s fine, if one is convening a meeting and the usage is formal. It’s just not very common, and it might not be well suited to the particular context, such as a volunteer organizer.
Perhaps it’s not Chinglish, but I’ve simply never heard it used outside of a Chinese context.
On an aside, it would seem our elected officials in NY ought to spend more time 召集, and less time 召妓!
