When I was in the US, it was like that, but flights to and from Asia, in my experience either had not enough passengers or passengers were staggered across the cabin intentionally.
I found myself without neighbours more times than I would call coincidental.

Same experience with Europe-US flights. How sweet it was to be able to lie down on the four seats of the central aisle… never slept better on a long-haul flight.
