The COVID-19 death rate has been trending to a level on par with the influenza mortality rate in Taiwan, partly due to widespread vaccination and the use of antiviral drugs, National Taiwan University public health professor Tony Chen (陳秀熙) said on a live-streaming session on YouTube Wednesday (Nov. 23).
He noted that during the outbreak of the Alpha variant, the mortality rates hovered between 3% and 7%, which were much higher than the 0.34% influenza mortality rate. However, during the Omicron variant outbreak, the COVID-19 death rate went below 0.3%.
Tony Chen is back!
Very good news however that the death rate continues to fall, even as unvaccinated elderly men continue to be taken down by this virus, as shown nearly every day in @MalcolmReynolds 's daily updates.
Guy
8 unvaccinated men died yesterday.
8 unvaccinated women.
Deaths in the 75-79 age group, according to the Dept. of Household Registration, are 57.7% male. In the CDC spreadsheet, they’re … um, 57.7% male.
In 2019, the average age at death in Taiwan (all-cause mortality) was 71 for men and 76 for women. The average age at death in the CDC spreadsheet (people testing positive for COVID at death) is 72 for men and 76 for women. The average age at death with cancer was 69 in 2019. The average age at death with (cancer+COVID) was 69.
These observations are in line with other countries: people dying “of” COVID were dying at or beyond the expected age-at-death.
In short, there is no apparent statistical difference between the deaths occurring “with COVID” and those occuring in the general population. Those CDC “COVID deaths” are quite obviously just routine deaths, and I’m sure the CECC know that. They can, of course, be completely confident that the general public will take their pronouncements at face value.

I just noticed the 2020 stats were released in October. I’ll have a look at those when I have time.
Trying to square it with what I’ve read in different reports.
The ministry found that men’s average life expectancy was 78.1 years, while women on average lived to 84.7 years.
