Coronavirus Vaccine in Taiwan - May/June 2021

Taiwan has done what Economy Minister Peter Altmaier asked for. If Altmaier really wants to make good on his own promise, and China is pressuring BNT to walk back on the agreed contract, then he could have arranged Germany to buy BNT and sell to Taiwan.

Waiting for Germany to come through for Taiwan?

This is not something I would ever count on, for reasons we’ve already discussed.

I’m thinking they are expecting vaccines but we won’t hear about it until the last minute. I think they are keeping this on the hush to prevent china meddling.

Also you can use the nhi app to register for vaccines, no need to buy a card reader.

You do know that BNT has Turkish owners?

" Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi paid his second trip to Turkey …"

It also has German and American owners.

500,577 doses have been administered in Taiwan as of June 1. That means just over 2% of Taiwan’s population has had at least one dose.

It took 8 weeks to reach 1% and 2 weeks to reach 2%. That’s a good sign, but the pace needs to speed up drastically.

I believe in Taiwan when it comes to having a fast paced vaccination drive. Once we have enough, I’m confident that we will be able to provide 100k doses daily at least.

What is harder to say though, is when we’ll have enough to even think about optimizing for pace. So much politics and crap that’s hard to control.

Foreigners need a card reader to authenticate their ID in the NHI app…

Getting vaccine appointments was anything but easy in the US until pretty recently. I got mine in April, and it was extremely frustrating and time consuming to get an appointment back then.

effing lol

First person with serious blood clot issues so far for Taiwan.

Speaking of the shot, anyone had any long lasting headaches afterwards? I’ve been having a pretty consistent mild headache for the past two to three weeks, so pretty much 4 or 5 days after I got my shot.

Went to the clinic yesterday and was told it was just stress induced headaches and that I should sleep earlier.

Oy… this will re-trigger some of that AZ hesitancy.

Not for me. I felt … odd? … for perhaps a week. Not quite brain fog, but just a bit dizzy, a bit slow, at the level of “Eh, maybe I won’t go for that long bike ride today.” But that definitely didn’t last for a few weeks.

Aww. My second shot was pencilled in for June 16th, so today (two weeks earlier) is the first day I could theoretically have registered for that. But MacKay’s website is telling me that - unsurprisingly - the program has stopped.

BioNTech CEO is Uğur Şahin. The cultural heritage of the CEO, the CEO’s own Adam Smith rationale, and human’s natural desire for money all may have contributed to BNT’s decision of no-sale to Taiwan. We are not even mentioning Merkel’s East Germany background.

In 1968, Merkel joined the Free German Youth (FDJ), the official communist youth movement sponsored by the ruling Marxist–Leninist Socialist Unity Party of Germany.[31][32][33]Membership was nominally voluntary, but those who did not join found it difficult to gain admission to higher education. Finally, the largest shareholder of BioNTech is a asset management company called AT Impf GmbH (see 2020 Annual Financial Report)

This company does “Holding, selling and acquiring shareholdings in companies of all kinds and legal forms.”

It is located at Rosenheimer Platz 6, 81669 MĂźnchen, Germany, but by whom is AT IMPF GMBH controlled?

I feel like “go to sleep earlier” accounts for at least a semester of teaching in Taiwanese med schools. (Followed by another semester of “try not to eat spicy foods”.)

I didn’t get the “no spicy foods” advice this time

I’ll probably try to get a bit more exercise in at home and get some more fresh air with late night walks when no one is around to see if that helps. If still doesn’t get better I’ll probably just go get checked out, rather be safe than sorry I suppose…but then again I did put it off for a while.

In fairness, given the sleep habits here, going to sleep earlier would help fix a lot of problems.
