Lot of people who write about Houtong/Houdong in Chinese address the pronunciation issue saying that the correct pronunciation of 硐 should be ( ㄊㄨㄥˊ ) but since the character was used to replace the less auspicious 洞 (ㄉㄨㄥˋ ) (water radical hints at flooding), locals like to pronounce it like the character for “tunnel”. Not a biggy. Will listen carefully next time I take the slow train there.
