Costco run from Taichung

Mmmm, feta

Panda, no membership required. And plenty of free parking.

GOINABROAD,

Take a train all the way to ShiJr (HsiChi) and the Costco is only a very short taxi ride away.

Hey SANDMAN, easy on the “septic” reference, you pasty-faced limey poof.

And the bad teeth. You forgot the bad teeth.

Sandman,

I’ve not been to the Tesco yet, but I hear there are two of them nearby each other in Taoyuan, one for Chinese food and the other more international one.
Also, by bus, what’s the best way to get there? Do we get the airport bus which goes through Taoyuan? Where’s the bus stop, anyone know?

Yeah, I heard there were two, but we just went to the first one we came to, which is the biggest and it happened to be the international one.

How to get there? No effin’ idea, I went in the car from the airport and had Jojo doing the navigation. It’s very well signposted, though.

Is it on NanKang rd. near the B&Q?? I heard that one of them is in the mall out there? Is that the international one or the chinese one?

Yes, the international one we went to is in a large mall and yes, I believe I remember seeing signs for the B&Q nearby.

don’t know how this forum got onto cat food… but heres some interesting info. ALL commercial cat food is poisonous crap! my dad worked for a homeopathic vet, making him a computer program. unless you are feeding your animal a organic dry food, you are slowly killing them. animals should live far longer than the average houshold pet does. heres a few things in pet food…
(Other animal parts sent to rendering plants include cancerous tissues, worm-infested organs, contaminated blood and blood clots. Compounding these toxins, slaughterhouses add carbolic acid and fuel oil to these remnants as a way of marking these foods as unfit for human consumption. ) check out this web page to see the
rest of what goes in… http://www.wholisticanimal.com/commercialfood.html
very frightening what we feed our loved ones!
by the way alien, could you send me the phone number of of the place you got your cats fixed at? this is dalyn, the girl you gave the little calico pip squeak to… shes ready to go in! dalynberry@hotmail.com

So Day, what do you feed your kitten?
What brand would you recommend? Where do you get it in Taipei?
My friends back in US just buried their beloved Waldo who lived for 20+ years. I don’t think they fed him anything other than Hill’s. I reckon that’s a pretty long life span for a cat.

Here’s the number for Rainbow’s (Grandma Nitti’s) vet: 2707-4075. You’d be well going to pick up a name card at Nitti’s cashier counter as it’s got a map on it. Back alley, not easy to find.
I took Wishbone there after the Pumkin fiasco at that asshole vet on Roosevelt, and she was better in just a few days. I even removed her stiches myself as the wound had healed so well.

Back to Costco. They also sell those massive jugs of Joy dish soap for $200NT, one which has lasted me since before Chinese New Year. And they’ve got that heavy duty clorox clean up stuff that smells great on floors and showers.

There are two Tescos in Nankan. One is located in in Taimall.
The other one is on Jingguo Road.

I haven’t noticed any differences in their selection of cheeses or other “foreign” foods. They usually have 5-6 different kinds of cheese, plus one kind of goat cheese. Their Taiwanese made “Italian” salami is a bit on the harsh and hard side. I prefer to buy that in Breeze. Their jams are great, but it seems that they are cutting back on some of the foreign stuff, like their own-brand chocolate cake mix (way better than the US one) and their baked beans with sausages. Last time I went there, they only stocked 4-5 different kinds of own-brand Jam. They used to have much more. They may return - I’ll ask next time i go there.

I see people mentioning the Breeze center as a source of imported foods. What do they have there?

Lots of good stuff (breeze) but expensive. Can’t really remember though. Gourmet Jellybeans.

Bri

I went to Tesco yesterday and was not too impressed. It reminded me too much of Carrefour. They did have a few things like a a decent selection of jams and mustards. However, I still prefer Costco, although I too could do without the super sized containers, not everything is family packed. (Anyone do Costco runs with others and split the huge value packs?)

I also like the The Breeze Center supermarket. I found some horseradish there and was quite pleased. Anyone go those little western food grocers in Tien Mu? I think they are quite good but a little pricey.

Blame the close-minded conservatism of yer average Taiwanese housewife. These stores start out with a wide cross-section of their products, but operate strictly according to market demand --so as soon as they see that a certain product isn’t moving fast enough, they stop reordering and replace it with more paomian, cos that’s what sells.

I remember when Carrefour was filled with goodies. No more. Tesco will go the same way for sure, so Holger, I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for more good jam.

Some of them don’t even do this start-out policy. I remember my disappointment when I went to the new Casino/Geant (French) store in Taizhong and found about a million kinds of disposable nappies but only one kind of cheese – processed slices.

They say Chinese people will eat anything with legs, including chairs and tables, but I guess only if its Chinese.

Well, Sandman… I have to disagree. Tesco claims to go the other way. Own-brand draught bitter, tonnes of salad dressings(caesar, idalian, french etc), more kinds of jam than ever and so on. The place is improving and they claim that they will expand the selection, as it sells well. the only thing I now get an Breeze is sausage.

The flip side is that the Taimall store has closed. As a result, the Jingguo road store is jam-packed on Sundays. Moreover, they run out of the imported stuff rather quickly. The dressings I bought last weekend were gone this week.

They will open their Zhongli store in November and a Taipei store next summer. The Zhongli store will make things much easier for me.

Oh well, no-one’s happier than me than to be proved wrong on this occasion, Holger. How easy is it to get from the Taimall Tesco to the other one, by the way? Can you still park at the Taimall and walk to the other Tesco, or is there separate parking?

They have a bus from Taimall to the other.

You can walk, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you enjoy a 3-4 miles walk through ugly Nankan.

I think I have seen it a couple of times.

To get there by car: Get off at the Nankan interchange and go left.(Not right toward taimall). No matter what you do, don’t get up on the elevated road. You’ll end up in carreforur. Turn right at Jingguo road (first large road at yor right.) It’ll be on your left side a mile down.

Their Scottish oats are ok.

Sandman,

Seperate parking. Lots of space, but it fills up quickly on weekends.

Thanks Holger. Their oats are damn good, btw, at last I can have real porridge again!
