Sorry, it’s 4.2% for 12 months
yeah i dont know sorry. We ended up not talking to them because they were too busy. They gave us our credit cards and asked us to wait but we said maybe we’ll come back another time to find out more.
If I ever get more info then I’ll update the thread
I have one with Mega for only 30k in order to use it on the internet without worrying that much. Also good for traveling. If it is lost or stolen, the loss is not catastrophic.
One bank gave me 300k limit. I had to beg for them to lower that to something more reasonable.
However I do have another one with over 100k limit to purchase air tickets. Unfortunately, it is very costly to go home.
In other news, I got an email saying my new Carrefour card is approved. Now, we keep on waiting… ![]()
My Citibank card was approved today too. I don’t know what the credit limit is yet though… they also never asked me which signup gift I want ![]()
What are you talking about? It’s a credit card! You are not liable for it if it’s lost or stolen…
According to this, the maximum you are liable for is $3,000 NTD
That likely means they just gave you the voucher. Best to call and ask them!
If someone “steals” your card number and buys a lotta stuff, then you have to go through the mafan of reporting, proving you did not buy the Ferrari, etc. Higher limit, higher mafan/loses. You still have to prove you did not purchase the items/services.
this might be another of the many, many stupid things about TW banking online system and their subtle discrimination against foreigners: so, I got my JCB Line Pay card with CTBC, the application was smooth as said (even though had to mail in all the docs since… we dirty foreigners cannot apply online, whatever). I activated the card on Friday night, and couldn’t see it on my online banking for the all weekend, my fiance’e’ told me to wait until Monday. So I did, still nothing.
Finally today went to the branch (all lines are busy) with my fiance’e’, and they literally told me that since I am a foreigner the ARC number is not recognised as an ID number by their system, so they have to use a made-up ID number consisting of my date of birth, first letters of my surname and a random checksum (this I knew from when I opened the account with them, only bank doing this), but this username applies only to my bank account, it can’t work for cards! My new user ID for their credit card is the same as for the account, minus the checksum! And need to reapply for online banking, how stupid can this be???
This leads also to a host of issues. Since the ARC is not linked in any way to my account/card, I cannot activate the auto-topup function of the Ipass and many other functionalities.
Just ytd the director of the Fintech Centre at the FSC spoke at a side webinar of HK Fintech Week about how TW is a good place for fintech… Regulation might even be workable, but implementation is shameful!
It’s the Chàbùduō culture. It almost works so it’s good enough.
I don’t really understand their attitude. The law allows banks to treat foreigners exactly the same as citizens.
Banks in Australia love it cos it means every one, foreigners/citizens/companies/small business/investors, banks online and the banks can close/understaff branches and save heaps of money and increase their profits. The bank I use in Australia does not have a single branch. Their customers also love it because they don’t need to leave their desk/bed/phone. Win-win.
Banks in Taiwan want to waste time and therefore money making foreigners do everything manually.
They give themselves more work when it’s totally unnecessary
Edit: Am I being too logical?
the finacial sector here, as I said in another thread, works more like a placement centre than an actual private sector, since a lot of banks are government owned. They need to employ as many people as possible with the most mundane bureaucratic things possible. It is a para-public unemployment insurance system.
On that side, things are very difficult to change if not with a shock therapy, i.e. new players entering the field and disrupting the MO of these jurassic institutions. But the barrier to enter is high.
Exactly. This is why I cancelled that card.
Also try purchasing car insurance or paying tax with it! Won’t work!
And… it limits you in that most of their co-branded cards won’t give you any rewards. The only card we can have is their crappy cashback one because they can set it to just use the cashback on the following bill.
Want to know the real stupid thing? Try using your normal ARC number to login to the online banking instead of the random code… (Spoiler alert… it works! However your credit card is still not linked…)
Before you get your hopes up though… bear in mind that it has been like this for at least 12 months
It’s here! Almost two months after the fact but it’s here!
I just got my Citibank card in the mail. $156,000 credit limit and 12.79% interest rate. Its’s the highest credit limit and lowest interest rate of my 3 cards. I don’t need a credit limit that big but it’s nice if anything comes up.
Also for those with long names they went a totally different way to other banks.
It’s surname First name Middle name with the last 2 letters of my middle name chopped off.
Their app is easily the best I’ve used and it’s in English ![]()
What does the app let you do?
Nothing. It’s just in English. Many features though are locked because… “foreigner”
One good thing with the citibank card though is that purchases over 5,000 can be split into 3 months (interest free!!!)
Used it for my air tickets when my employer was paying anyway…
It’s just easy to use and presented well.
What features are locked? All the credit card features seem to be working like normal
@justintaiwan Brokerage is clearly locked for one… Also if you go to the “get more” you will find it’s empty as they quietly hide them so you don’t feel left out… In there you’d usually find special offers on loans etc… They also sometimes advertise specials on credit cards etc…
But as they say “stay tuned, we will show offers ‘relevant’ to you” I guess nothing is relevant to us…
Just like the China Trust App… Most things appear normal. But hidden behind the veil…
What sign-up gift did you get?
