Credit Cards for Foreigners - General Discussion

Nice, congratulations

From my experience with banks here they will throw up a discriminatory wall, you contact FSC and they will chalk it up to a big misunderstanding, then the next foreigner who applies gets the wall again. They never learn

i really wanted this card but never applied based on what other foreigners here had posted… and the application form being very clearly discriminatory

Well, try again!

I might be changing jobs soon and I just got the 2% cashback card. I’ll give it a rest for a few months, I already have 3 cards :joy:

Ironically, I like to apply just to see if I can. If banks were fairer here I’d probably only have 1 or 2 cards :joy:

yep, that’s it for me too. but some have actually nice perks, and as long as I can avoid the annual fee, I’ll apply for them.

This HSBC card is an expensive one, 8k p.a. fee (not waivable I think), but the accrual rates for miles are very, very good. You can make it up quite fast with miles.

One step at a time!

Rich man…

I have a card at the Cooperative Bank, workers are very nice but clearly not used to dealing with foreign currencies. As an example, in order to cash in a check in usd I had to come personally to the bank with not one but two Taiwanese guarantors.

Blimey…

Did Coop give you a guarantor free card? They absolutely wouldnt budge with me. Either guarantor or deposit locked in

Land bank let me deposit a foreign check a week off the plane but they weren’t thrilled about it. Plus had to wait a month for it to clear

I cannot remember but I think I had a friend being a guarantor for the card too…

Anyone know if changing ARC number causes your taiwan credit history to get reset?

People in another thread said it changes over without issues. Even for those who naturalized.
Haven’t heard from anyone with ARC that they had issues with that either.

No. They don’t. I also checked my credit history and it had history from way back when I had my old number.

I think this was one of the very few things that the government actually thought of…

Tbh the JCIC is quite a nice piece of bureaucratic efficiency. Besides the very outdated login methods, the functionalities are very convenient and informative. Love the notifications when FIs access my credit report/score.

Jesus Christ, Esun really pissing me off. So I applied for their new Starlux gold card since it is free for the first year for application by 31-may and gives out a lot of free miles to then use for free flights (my only aim with this card tbh for the moment given limited extra-Asian network).

So they require TWD 1M income, I got more than that well shown on my HSBC statements and with the employment contract. Gave them 6 MONTHS worth of statements. They called me twice today after more than 20 days I applied, and asked me first to provide them with the passbook copies (HSBC doesn’t have them, kudos to them for this!), then also to show that I have 1M in savings.

Racist fucks, I don’t need to show u I have 1M in savings but only that I have more than 1M in income, which I well do. Than even tried to ask me for a guarantor, there my blood boiled.

Not going to relent, but this is a reason I never used Esun, they are too old in their ways.

Cmon, not even pdf application forms available either at branches or online, so you are barring foreigners to apply already to this card, then managed to get a workaround with the Nanjing East Rd branch in Taipei (where they have a lovely teller, she is actually very nice and helpful), but the HQ just won’t have it.

Screw them, will go again directly to the ombudsman again, just told them to ask HSBC what happened with them! (END OF RANT, sorry folks)

Well, Esun understood that better not playing games and approved my card today.

Let’s see what limit they’ll give me.

Could you try getting Chang Hwa Bank credit card without guarantor and deposit? Haven’t seen any success stories from them.
They were very stubborn. Refused to help me apply. At that time I didn’t know where to appeal or complain. It is the bank that I get my salary from work.

Will try at some point

Changhua was the worst. I was able to appeal most declines but government banks are essentially impossible. From my test run.

I flopped out of

Taiwan Bank. They will tell you you can apply but will come back with new decline nonsense each time. Will mail your app back to the branch if you try to skip the branch

Land Bank. Will just mail your app back to the branch. Demands guarantor

Changhua. Won’t even give you an app. Demands guarantor or deposit.

Taiwan Cooperative. Will mail your app back to the branch. Demands guarantor or deposit

Taiwan business bank will let you apply but it’s getting rejected

It’s interesting how the government banks are the worst actors.
