Credit Cards for Foreigners - General Discussion

I’ve read in many places that they treat foreigners pretty well, are they the only bank that doesn’t discriminate against us?
Is there also any good bank for stock exchange? I would probably want to move everything to a bank that treats me well and build my rapport with them.

On the same topic, does cancellation of credit cards affect your credit score?

It is rare indeed. But i did meet some very nice people during the past few years who would be willing to help out. I am not married so it is mostly my friends signing as guarantors for car purchases and stuff as well.

I know plenty of ARC holders who got car loans with no guarantor. Should not be required.

When I first got to Taiwan I put a mil twd in a smaller Taiwan bank thinking they would approve credit and loans easier since they were small. Well, not only did they tell me that foreigners can’t get their cards, they also said that they took the liberty of blocking my ATM card from overseas withdrawals as it was their policy for foreigners. This was before I knew of the FSC so a month after opening the account I closed it. He asked why and I said why, but they already knew. He said OK, as they counted out and put the 1000s into a sack I brought. Didn’t care at all haha

Went across the street to Sino, deposited the same cash and had a card in hand that month

They didn’t use to be foreigner friendly. It took a few complaints from some of us posters here I think.

HSBC is the only bank I dealt with that asked to see my US + Taiwan tax returns, did a credit check against my US social security number, and asked for financial statements of my US assets, when considering me for a guarantor-less personal mortgage. Other banks wouldn’t look at foreign assets and wanted a guarantor. They don’t do business loans though so I had a tough time and left my business bank (esun) for abandoning me last minute.

Do they do business loans for locals? I always got the feeling local banks are only interested in medium large enterprises, mostly large was the impression I got. Personal loans are seen as a weakness since you obviously need money and Taiwanese are expected to have savings or family to ask.

Yeah the collateral should be the car. I was just fed up and was on a busy work season. I don’t understand how dumb the Taiwanese financial institutions are.

Maybe only for publicly traded companies since they don’t open business bank accounts for small businesses even for locals

They called me today. Yesterday I asked their HQ whether I can do deposit, cc, loans and mortgages with them. They said yes and no need for guarantor. But today their Shilin branch calls me and ask me when i want to create the advanced account (mind you that this need to maintain 500k every month) and then I asked them about loans they said they don’t do for foreigners. (They know I have APRC) seems like another FSC report.

I know several foreigners who got loans from HSBC. Some on this forum have posted about it.

also, if you open the advance account and keep less than 500k/mo, there is no actual under-balance fee.

It used to ding me a under balance fee until I realized if you didn’t have the fee amount there when they tried to take it once a month the account was free lol . But it did try to take the fee unless that changed recently

Reminder that it happening this weekend. Expect some service disruptions. Next week we hopefully have a nice new online website for HSBC credit cards.

Service suspended/termination period

The Bank is about to upgrade and maintain its credit card system.
During the maintenance period, service items and schedules will be suspended/terminated.

I’m still old school. HSBC sends me an email once a month with the bill attached, it gets autopaid. Credit cards still used, no fancy apple pay. Old habits wont die

that’s not old school, that’s already e-bill.

old school folks would go to the branch or 7-11 and pay the paper statement sent via post.

You are already very advanced.
