Credit Cards for Foreigners - General Discussion

One need to register to the new HSBC credit card website:

It’s still pretty basic, but way better than before.

Feels like a ripoff from the web banking design. Similar, yet uncanny.

extremely basic, but much better than the previous. more in line with the design language of other non-HK HSBC units.

They could be more mindful with screen real estate.

1/3 of my computer screen is this

The MuiBox-root container has a 80 pixel padding on top for no reason!

yeah. TBH just combining cards into the main account login would make much more sense…

There is an API they made. Just need the Bearer token from the session and I can query and process my data by myself.

@Mataiou you probably know more about this. Does MasterCard have similar feature? Do Taiwanese credit cards use this? How to opt out in Taiwan?

this is very hit or miss. Not everyone uses it, and if they do not everyone allow to opt-out.

I am not aware of the situation in TW for VAU, and since we do not issue MC at my company I’m not aware of that either.

ok, u client r not charged but the issue is charged by Visa for VAU services. A small fee per new account.

Just checking the brains trust.

What happens with easy cards attached to credit cards when your credit card is replaced?

When you activate the new credit card foes the previous easy card balance get transferred to the new card’s easycard?

When that happened to me a few years ago, they did not transfer the balance however within a few statements they deposited the credit as a credit to my credit card bill. The new card had a zero balance

Yes, I can confirm this is correct. A couple of my Credit cards with inbuilt easy card function had the balance credited to my next billing cycle when they issued new cards.
Most recently, when DBS re-issued their new ECO card to replace my Citibank card, they did the same thing.

This is my exact situation!

DBS staff in Chiayi refused to let me open an investment account with a US$ deposit to earn 5.88% in December. DBA staff refused to believe I was an ROC citizen and told me to go elsewhere. So I went to HSBC Taichung and got 6%

Are you going to report them for discrimination? Can probably milk them since you’re actually a citizen.

I did. I also emailed the CEO

boys, what a shitshow my “for the science” application for a Huanan combo credit/debit card. 1 month of calls, visits to branch, forms, chops… FFS, the staff is the only thing worth being saved at Huanan, super polite and friendly, even over the phone, kudos to them. But their processes and policies…

Also they still blatantly require guarantors for “normal” foreigners, they exempt gold card holders from the requirement. Bigots

The two on par with Huanan for worst foreigner experience are Land Bank and Changhua. It’s ironic as they are all government banks so one might expect less discrimination

I actually have been quite impressed with BoT. Fast opening of account, relatively painless credit/debit card application, good app also in English.

Also mega bank not too shabby, the app is worse than BoT, website clunky but workable, polite staff. Applied for their combo card too, let’s see what happens

How many cards do you have by now?

just cancelled 3 (2 fubon (J card and tw mobile) and 1 xin kong (mitsukoshi card)), probably going to cancel another (and last) xin kong since no use.

I have:

  1. DBS World flying mastercard (main domestic spending card, TWD 15/mile for BR, CI and CX)
  2. HSBC Diamond Mastercard (if linked to Jkou pay can give up to 3% cashback points which you can actually then convert to miles, if TWD 500K+ in deposits at a HSBC account they double the cashback rate to 6%. also allows to accrue with spending via Jkou/line pay at any store and gas station)
  3. Cathay United Eva Air Visa Infinite (main BR airline and foreign spending card, TWD 10/mile for BR when purchasing tickets on BR or spending abroad and 5% off on TW originating return flights)
  4. Fubon Costco Mastercard (self explanatory)
  5. Amex Eva Air Platinum (only for perks, like lounge access (BR, amex centurion and PP) hotel status (Hilton gold, marriott gold elite, randisson premium), car rentals status (Avis president’s and Hertz gold), restaurants/hotel discounts (domestic, abroad use amex FHR network for perks), pretty bad accrual rates for miles per se, barely decent for foreign spending)
  6. CTBC China Airlines Visa Signature (got it for fun, not much use rn, but the top card is a good deal with status if u fly CI a lot, I’m a BR guy though)
  7. Esun Starlux World Mastercard (got it for the welcome bonus, not too many perks besides speedy check-in and tw originating flights. not even lounge access for top card)
  8. Xin Kong JAL JCB (most likely will cancel, but has nifty lounge feature in JP)
  9. Taishin Everrich Visa Signature (super good discounts at Everrich duty frees)
  10. Taishin FET let’s Friday Mastercard (now moved to FET, so can get more cashback and also has 1.1$/l discount when refuelling at NPC)
  11. BoT combo mastercard (for the science, it’s free and has 5 withdrawals/mo for free at any domestic ATM)

Applied and waiting for: Huanan Combo Mastercard, Mega Combo mastercard.
