Cumin is shite

Yes or no? I say yes

Love it. Made this the other day, going into my regular rotation.

No olives, more capers, no potatoes, mango for the raisins, red wine. Going to make more and eat it with corn tortillas from the deli.

I don’t particularly like it. Rarely use it. It’s not as shite as coriander leaves, though.

I moderately like it, and I use it fairly often in cooking.

I wouldn’t eat it as a snack (maybe you’re doing it wrong?), but I usually put one or two spoonfuls of lightly roasted seeds in rice before cooking for a bit more flavor, especially if I’m cooking Indian or Middle Eastern food.

I guess you’re one of those people for whom coriander tastes soapy?

I think it tastes a bit soapy but I love it in/on everything. Sometimes I just eat three or four bunches raw with some other greens. I like cumin too. I think a lot of tasty herbs taste like soap smells.

Yeah, same here. I can definitely taste why people find it soapy, but I like it anyway. :man_shrugging:

I love it; 孜然羊肉 is awesome (in China).

Good in moderation, and when it’s used to enhance a food’s flavor and not smother it.

No. Cumin really adds to the flavor of grilled meat.

My fondness for the Mexican food that I’ve enjoyed over the years compels me to answer in the negative, because I’m fairly certain that the source below is correct (and not alone) in saying that

John Meeker, The Mexican Kitchen Garden

I think I should add that in the old days, a couple of my co-workers occasionally used to share curry or curry-like dishes (I guess from Burma Town in Zhonghe) that had a distinctly cumin flavor that reminded me of Texas chili. I miss those.

I love it especially the smell, I put small amount in my chilli beef and beans.
Also try buttered mashed potatoes with small amount.

I made dal yesterday with both, also both for chili. And i make a Chinese beef dish with cumin seeds

Mexican food wouldn’t be the same without cumin and cilantro. So definitely no.

You’re probly doing it wrong. Cumin is one of those spices that you use very sparingly. If you can actually pick it out as a prominent flavour, you’ve added too much, or you’ve failed to add sufficient quantities of the other spices that complement its flavour.

Cumin on a sheep is also very popular in Australia

Cumin is good.

Me too! This thread topic makes me scratch my head.

Then again, lots of stuff posted on forumosa make me do that. :slightly_smiling_face:

Coriander seed and root powder. Good.

Same in NZ—Almas John used to laud the dish.
