I’m considering moving to Taiwan, probably Taipei, and am curious about the D&D or tabletop roleplaying scene. Is it very active? If so, are games often in English? Thanks for your help!
I dont play D&D or any other role games. I don’t remember seeing role players in any game shop. There are some shops selling scenography but mostly for miniature games. Boardgame shops don’t sell role (AFAIK and can remember). I think the same goes to comic (manga) shops.
There must be players around, but my guess is that the community is pretty small.
I would play, i ran a game during my PhD before I came to Taiwan. Never found any players here.

Boardgaming is small too, but at least there’s something.
There are Mandarin D&D facebook groups.
I see people playing TTRPG at the Guanhua underground place. I don’t think it will be in English however.
As others have mentioned, it’s here but in Mandarin. You could try setting up your own English-speaking TTRPG group through Facebook? I know there are TT gameshops that rent tables for a small fee (at least in Taoyuan); perhaps you could arrange something there?
An anecdote: My grown son, a big Magic: The Gathering player at the time, came to visit me back in 2013. He was able to find and join an MTG competition in Taipei at a game shop. He couldn’t speak/read a word of Chinese, but he knew the cards by sight and actually came in second place! I was super impressed

Like I hav no idea where to start
I’ve been working hard trying to make this a thing in the Hsinchu area. It feels possible, and I have a table I want to ideally in the long-term expand into a broader hobby group, but for now the players are not very reliable. I have heard that some D&D tables are running in English but god knows how to reach the people who are playing (not to join, just to make the hobby feel “available” to people who are around).
Pinging this old post in hopes of update. I’m in town for 2 weeks and plenty time on my hands. I’m a full-time DM back in San Diego, and hoping to find a place I can play as a player or if some people want to get together for a one shot?
