Data - how do you pronounce it?

Just curious…

I pronounce the word Data like…

  • Day-tuh - always like how Captain Picard says it
  • Da-tuh - always like how Doctor Pulaski says it
  • Day-tuh for data science, but Da-tuh for database
  • Da-tuh for data science, but Day-tuh for database
  • Day-tuh for the Star Trek TNG Android, but Da-tuh for everyelse
  • Dah-tuh
  • Some other combination (Please elaborate)

Day-tuh: /ˈdeɪtə/
Da-tuh: /ˈdætə/
Dah-tuh: /ˈdɑːtə/

It would be interesting if we can get some explanation to why you arrived at how you say that word.

If there’s just one datum, it’s just a number.

I’m just throwing grenades into grammar

I use both, I think, but don’t have corpus data for explanatory context

Either either

I’m not sure, but I think when I was young I pronounced it da-tuh:/ˈdætə/, but over the years, I kept hearing day-tuh:/ˈdeɪtə/, so eventually I adopted that pronunciation.

It rhymes with how people in Boston say “waiter.”

It’s a British vs 'merkun pronunciation thing.

Latin origins would prefer the British pronunciation.

yes, some of us have learnt Latin.

I feel like I should say dah-tah more

Wouldn’t Classical Latin prefer Dah-tah?

Yes, that’s what I thought i was agreeing to. Same sound and stress on both syllables.

Nerds. No one pronounces the last syllables of things. “Date”.

I think I use “day-tuh” naturally, including in “database”. It’s one of those words I might not be totally consistent with though, e.g., if I’m talking to someone who pronounces it another way.

I’ve always said ‘day-tuh’, in all cases.
