Data Recovery - Help!

A’ight fellas - long time no speak.

I did a search and didn’t find any suitable advice so here you have it: my Western Digital 80G EHD is playing up. My PC won’t read the data on it (about 25G’s worth of music, pics, doccies, software).

Went to a website (www.paretologic.com) and downloaded their software which picks up all the data on the drive and then wants to charge $49.95 to actually restore it.

Is there any other way of sorting this out, without dropping 50 bucks? Any freeware? Or should I take it to a data recovery specialist?

Ai yo!

And thanks in advance.

You could give TestDisk a try, it’s free and open source (I just read about it yesterday, haven’t used it myself).

There’s already a thread about this, though it may be hard to find at the minute while the search database gets rebuilt. Basically you need to decide how much that data is worth. If it’s not worth 50 bucks, then by all means play about with freeware.

Rule #1 though is to unplug that hard drive right now and don’t play about with it till you’re ready to start the recovery process.

I’ll post the link to the old thread (or merge this) when I can find it. There’s some recommended software in there.

EDIT: Here’s the older thread: viewtopic.php?t=53674&highlight=

Damn, that software doesn’t help naught.

I’ll try a software recovery specialist (luckily I do have most of the stuff backed up).

Which program or programs did you try, and what happened?

Actually, the TestDisk software is working, but it can’t find the EHD.

Bugger.
