Dates not showing in picture folder

my dear son was hammering on the keyboard again, and now the folder MY PICTURES does not display the dates (or “names”) under each subfolder as it used to. i’ve messed about with this for some time, but have not yet come upon the answer. the dates/names show in each subfolder, but not in the main MY PICTURES folder.

anyone know what he hit, or more importantly, how to get those dates to show again?

I’m guessing that this is Windows XP. First, go to the view menu and check that “details” is selected. See if that fixes it. If not, then go back to the view menu and “choose details”.

Not 100% what you mean, xtrain, but does “View>List” or “View>Details” sort you out?
(“View” is at the top of the window)

i need to be more clear, as the above isn’t quite solving this. (it is XP).

i have the folders set to show as thumbnails (ie a yellow folder where you can see/preview some of the photos [up to 4] inside) and which used to display the shooting date under the folder. the shooting date has now disappeared.

if i used joe’s sugg, i get the shooting dates back, but lose the “preview” aspect of thumbnails. i have also clicked on “choose details”, and the appropriate ones are checked, but still nothing shows up in that folder.

stranger still is that one of the subfolders in MY PICTURES has a collection of older picture folders in it, and the shooting dates are still displayed there, just not in the main MY PICTURES folder.

maybe this will be clearer?

Well here’s something else you could try. Go into the folder you are happy with, then click on Tools>Folder Options.
Click the “View” tab and click “Apply to all folders”.

that last one seems to have worked. thanks iris.

(now waiting to find out what i’ve managed to screw up by doing this  )

Hehe. Yeah I thought about that before I told you. There’s a reset option in there in case it all goes horribly wrong. :stuck_out_tongue:

View>Details
Right-click on the details bar (name, size, type…) choose “more”
Check “Date picture taken” OK
View>Thumbnails
Right-click in folder “Arrange icons by>Picture taken on”
Right-click in folder “Show in groups”
