I think it is time to open a thread for the non-Taibei community. (perhaps there is one already, that I have missed?)
If you happen to be in Taizhong, near Donghai University and you are looking for a place to chill out and drink a cup of excellent coffee or tea, the place to go is Deci Huayuan, a mixture of porcellain shop and cafe.
There are only two/three tables so don’t go there if you are looking for a lot of people.
It is located in Lixiangguo (Utopia) in No. 25 Yishu Bei Jie one Alley north of the main street Yishu Jie. Post me if you need directions.
Plus, the delightful and hospitable proprietoress has a lot of very nice antiques and knick-knacks for sale in an extremely aesthetically pleasing environment.
She’d be making money hand over fist if she was in Taipei.
This place sounds interesting. Is it still open? Does it have food (lunch)? Does anyone have an exact address?
I need to make a trip to Donghai (Tunghai) University within a week or so and am looking for places in that neighborhood that might have good food (type doesn’t matter too much) or be otherwise interesting.

There are now dozens of small restaurants, coffee shops, tea shops etc. in that area, along with a thousand places you can buy identical chintzy household stuff in that home-on-the-range kind of style.
I don’t really care about buying xiaodongxi or whatever. Mainly I just need a good place to eat near campus. I’m accompanying a visitor there, which is why I’m hoping not to have to take my chances on a random restaurant. I’m not familiar with the area at all.
Sorry Cranky, rice-t is in Germany right now, so probably won’t see this. The cafe is gone now. However, that “art street” has a little kind of square about halfway up, with a set of steps leading up to a kind of mezzanine. There’s a really good Hakka restaurant up there that is well worth a visit.
I wish I could describe it better.
