My middle kingdom history is a little hazy, but didnāt Mao avoid fighting the Japanese wherever possible? That way he was able to defeat the depleted KMT forces after the war. Having said that, the KMT were a bit naughty with surprise attacks on the Communists during supposed truces.
The commie history though is that they bravely fought against the Japanese imperialists at every turn.
i remember reading that the CCP where working as double agents and playing both parties off against each other. at one point supplying the Japanese with KMT troop movements.
