-Desitin
-A&D Diaper Rash Cream
-Aquaphor
-any zinc oxide cream at least 40%
I knew I should have stocked up on them in the US before coming over but I was sooo sure the millions of pharmacies here would have zince oxide 40%. I was so wrong. We’ve purchased three different creams so far, in tiny tubes from 180 NTD to 350 NTD and they’re just not as strong as good ol’ Desitin Extra Strength for $8 USD.
My child is getting the worst case of diaper rash and his skin is breaking. It happened so fast, partly because of the loose stools, and partly because of the change in environment, and humidity.
If you have any other great suggestions for treatments where I can get in Tianmu, please let me know.
WCIF diaper rash? I’ll retitle it for you and ship it to Health.
We got our zinc oxide in Mexico, but it’s only 15%. I can look for a stronger one for you if you want, later this month when we’re there. Dragonbabe says many parents here in Taiwan would take their baby to the doctor in order to get something stronger prescribed. Good luck!
Is there any possibility of just letting him run around naked for a day or two? The change in humidity can really do a number on your bottom, even if your a big person. If you can let it air out at home, that really would be the best option, at least for a start.
Some things that can help diaper rash, that aren’t products specifically for it, are:
Lanolin (also expensive, though)
Zink Oxide (like for sun exposure)
Aloe
Petroleum jelly
(And you can make a mix of the four, actually.)
Active Culture Plain Yogurt (yep, really. But only if you think it could be yeast related due to prolonged exposure to loose stools. You can actually google for photos of such type of rash!)
Hydrocortizone .5% or 1% cream (but in my opinion, depnding on its inactive ingredients, this could sting.)
Oh, yes, I forgot–BREAST MILK. Really. It has great antibodies and is all natural, non-irritating, and soothing!
You know, I wish I could have known how difficult it was to find these things in store here. And overnight diapers. And 2% lactose-free milk. And the funny thing is we were under by a few hundred pounds for our sea shipment. Grr…looks like baby daddy’s got some shopping to do on his next trip back to Amurka.
Yeah, we’ve stocked up on the Lactaid from Costco too. Only full fat though. Hey, Taiwan’s getting there…slowly but surely. I suspect the loose stools is caused by the local milk, but that’s just me.
Milk is not a required part of a diet. There are cultures which do not drink milk. Why not cut it out?
Surely there must be a way to convert full-fat milk to skim, through either mechanical agitation to make butter, then remove the butter, leaving low-fat milk, or through boiling then chilling and skimming.
Why would a baby need low-fat milk? If you’re feeding baby milk, just cut other fats in the diet.
If anyone knows the address of the local kiddies’ clinic in Tianmu, that may be the best place for the OP to take her kid. They are very good in Taiwan.
They will be able to check whether it’s candida and requires a strong anti-fungal cream or perhaps antibiotics.

Would love to, I only have milk in coffee or ice cream, but the boy lurves it. I’d rather Lactaid than soy/rice/almond milk for him. Trust me, I debated this issue too. We’re the only animals that drink another animal’s milk. shudder Milk tastes gross to me.
Ok, you go, Dragonbones!
I have more than one baby. At 2, it’s best to switch to 2% milk - if they still drink it, that is.
You can get Desitin online at for about NT$240 to $400 a tube depending on the type and size.

Can’t get these in Tienmu, but would highly recommend buying these brand of products online. The calming lotions, balms and soaps have prevented our little one from getting any diaper rash at all. My mother-in-law from Taiwan liked these products so much, she brought some back with her for her grand babies in Taiwan.
I should have mentioned before that when my son was born we quickly found out that he was allergic to any kind of diaper sold here other than Mamy Poco. So if you’ve switched to a local brand, maybe try some different ones.
