South African Airways Flight 295 Taipei-Johannesburg crashed near Mauritius.
Apparently, the crash is still unsolved as the wreckage washed up on Madagascar and at the time, politics and relations between Madagascar and South Africa prevented full disclosure and cooperation.

There’s lot of tidbits about that crash around the Web. Apparently the captain refused to fly the plane, and caved in after being threatened with dismissal.
They always used those 747 Combis in those days so they could ship more “cargo”. Was there really a need passenger-wise for two airlines making two non-stops from JBG to TPE in those days? The theory was that Taiwan was the backdoor SA needed to get a lot of naughty things it wasn’t allowed to because of sanctions. Taiwan and SA’s era of official ties would make a very interesting investigative book.
