What should I do with them. I’m not even considering asking my Taiwanese friends this question!
Take 'em to 7-11 or one of the other convenience stores and drop 'em in the used batteries container you’ll find there. I think Wellcome also has them (I know they used to).

I’m glad to know that your wife is environmentally aware. I would wager though that the vast majority of batteries here go straight into the rubbish bin.
Check the volumes in the disposals. I think you’ll be surprised.
Best not judge a place and its people by the refuse at its picnic sites.
