Discounts at road shops

I am probably gonna buy a bike from a shop in New Taipei City next week. I like the guys there and I will probably stick with that shop as long as I stay in Taipei. My question is, is it acceptable in Taiwan to bargain on new bikes? In the States it is normal practice, expected actually, to try to get the MSRP knocked down a little bit on a new bike. Can I do that here too, or is it out of the question and I’ll just offend them? Thanks!

P.S. Let’s ride! If I end up fitting on the kids bike I am gonna buy…yikes!

Most Taiwanese people I know will haggle on the price of just about anything. I don’t see why a bike would be any different. You’ll be told at first that no, this is the lowest price we can offer, but there is usually some kind of discount to be had. If not, you should argue for some extras for the bike(light, rack, etc.) for free.

A Taiwanese guy who works in a bike shop just sent me this link:

It looks to me like most of the (off-brand) bikes on there are around 6000NT. That seems very cheap. Has anyone ever bought a bike like that before? Is it good stuff? I’m only gonna use it for a year so it doesnt really have to be top-of-the-line. If I can get something halfway decent for 6000NT that would be good enough.

Also, does anyone know of a brick-and-mortar store where you can buy these kind of cheap bikes?
