NOT a visa-free entry. A visitor visa. Do I need a ticket showing that I am leaving Taiwan?
The person granting the visa has to be convinced that you are not coming here to stay or get work. To obtain the visa, there is no requirement to show any travel arrangements, however it goes a long way toward making your case. If you were to show them a one-way ticket/reservation, you would probably not be convincing them you are just coming for a visit. In the interest of convincing the person to grant you the visa, I strongly suggest you get an itinerary from an airline, travel agent or web site showing travel in and out of Taiwan. You don’t necessarily need to show any financial statements to get a tourist visa, but a print out showing a wad of money in your bank account helps to show them you can support yourself on this visit.
When you actually go to board a plane to come here, you will almost certainly be asked to show a ticket out of Taiwan, unless you are a resident of Taiwan.

They (Hong Kong) were more interested in seeing my bank statements when I got my last visa. But they can pretty much do anything they want and it might make a difference where you apply (no visitor visas for tourism in Manila for example). But I would change the last sentence to ‘When you board a plane… you could be asked to show a ticket out of Taiwan…’ It’s better to have it since you could be in an expensive situation (buying the ticket at the airport) but IIRC I have been asked for it once on int’l flights. Standard recommendation is the same: buy a ticket unless you’re feeling lucky.
i didnt need one,but i have pages of stamps in taiwan.now married so needed to leave and come back in on a Visitor visa.The airline asked me if i had an out bound flight,i said no but i have funds to buy one.she made a note on the system and nothing at tapei when i landed.
Is it a student Visitor Visa or a working Visitor Visa?
When I applied for my working Visitor Visa at the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) I was not required to show any evidence of a return ticket to my home country. I would say give them a call and ask first : ).
For buying return plane tickets to my home country, I have previously used Malaysia Airlines. If I add the flexi-ticket option, I find it very easy to call up their customer service centre and cancel or change my flight time. Usually changing the flight time costs no more than the difference of ticket prices. Cancelling cost me around 50USD i think. They subtracted that from the refunded money that went back onto my credit card. I have bought a ticket and moved/cancelled many times with Malaysia Airlines and I would say it’s very easy. They also have a physical office in Taipei city you can go to and sort things out in person.
Having a return ticket is a good insurance policy, i think… If you’re not too hard for pennies at the moment.
