Do you have to get an ARC, or Residency visa?

Just curious… do I need to get an ARC or residency cert (edit: I mean visa) if I am studying Chinese for another year? I have work, but it’s basically only enough to sustain myself for the time being that I am here. I don’t really have to worry for about a year. I make what the average Taiwanese makes (22-23k a month).

I’m not sure that I have the required funds to show (exactly 60k I’ve got though) for ARC and I think I need to get a background check done but no idea how to do that either. This is a hell lot more difficult than I hoped it would be.

What to do?

To get an ARC you’ll need to meet the relevant requirements. If it’s with a student visa, talk to your school and they’ll be able to help you with the process, or at least tell you what you need to do. As long as you’re studying the right amount of hours at an approved school, there should be no problem. Based on what you’ve said elsewhere, I don’t think you would qualify for a work permit therefore no ARC possible that way.

If you don’t get the student visa, I guess you’ll need to just do a visa run to HK every couple of months.

EDIT - The details of a student visa are at boca.gov.tw/content.asp?CuItem=4401

I prepaid for 1 year of Chinese and can prove it. Why would they make me leave the country every couple months? That’s awful.

Not sure what you mean. the “RC” of ARC means resident certificate.

If you get a student visa they won’t.

What’s a student visa? I’ve never, ever, heard of that. All I have is visitor’s, and they told me I need a residency certificate. You can’t get an ARC without having a bank account, and you can’t get a bank account without having an ARC. So, what, you want to tell me it’s a loophole? ARC is not the same as RC. Can’t be. The post office told my friend that when we went there.

You certainly can open a bank account without an arc.

In your situation, the only way you can get an arc is to first get a student visa, details of which should be in the link I posted above. You cannot get an arc with a visitor visa.

ARC is the card you’ll need to apply for after you get a resident visa.

I think you need the bank account statement to show you have sufficient funds, it doesn’t need to be a taiwanese bank account.

I don’t have any other bank. I have to open a Taiwanese bank account, but I need a resident visa, which requires to show sufficient funds, which means… I can’t do anything right now. And what exactly is a plan for studying Chinese (saw it on the website images gave me)? I was just looking up I will have to do some research for that.

To repeat, you do not need an arc to open a bank account.

You can’t open a bank account without a different kind of visa other than Vistor’s. True or false? I know the ARC is not required for that. You misunderstood my question. What I want to know is this: is the ARC required at all? Do I need it? Why do I need it? Can I just get a residency visa and be done with it? What’s the difference between Residency and Visitor’s? How do I open a bank account on a VISITOR’s visa? I can’t right? Or do I have to switch from Visitor’s to Student (which is still visitor’s according to the website). Really confused!

Yes, you can open a bank account on a visitors visa.

Any kind of resident visa requires you to also have an arc. As you are not married to a Taiwanese citizen and don’t meet any requirements for a work permit, the only way you can do it is via a student visa. Or stay on a visitor visa and go to Hong Kong every couple of months for visa run.

Many thanks.

“What’s a student visa? I’ve never, ever, heard of that.” Not to be discouraging, but are you sure you want to stay in Taiwan. :unamused:

It’s amazing what you can miss when you are stressed. I don’t think the OP is being deliberately obtuse.
