Do you think America will come to Taiwan’s aid if China attacks? Should it?

Both DPP and KMT are like deer in the headlights when it comes to decades plus of forward thinking about national strategy. Yeah, one might say KMT shills for China, but 8 years of CSB and 8 years of Tsai and DPP didn’t think out of the box or even consider remotely what to do if no one comes to Taiwan’s help. A pox on all Taiwan leaders’ forward game-scenario analyses. Anyway, it is what it is now.

Will Taiwan will come to Taiwan’s aid if China attacks?

On a recent poll, 57% of Taiwanese college students said they’d surrender if China invades, compared to 22% who’d fight.

I remember being struck by an article around the time of Ukraine’s invasion and how mentally prepared the Ukrainians were for war. A bar in underground bunker with ashtrays made of bullets was how I (mis)remember one example. That kind of stuff.
Was so different than how I perceive Taiwanese.

My perception could be wrong. The guys in my building could potentially make good soldiers.

Can’t really blame them

I agree
but dynamics are sort of a wild card

I am in no way a fan of DPP, so don’t get me wrong. But if we are being objective and fair, no president navigated the issues better than Tsai. This seems very obvious given everything that happened. She navigated intense international pressure from abroad (USA, china and otherwise), handled covid betrer than nearly any other country whilst making us more money…not less…she did this with constant strong oppression from china, and all the countries that kowtow to the CCP. She broadened our export abilities abroad to non Chinese countries to expand our portfolio…the polar opposite of what MA did to sabotage our country. She did all thai without sparking a war, and also not selling our our dignity and sovereignty. No president of Taiwan has come close to accomplishing anything even remotely close to this.

There are still problems. D Especially the current administration. Allowing TSMC to go to THE USA is a strategic mistake everyone is going to agree with in 20 years. Or’s not worth the few weapons. The most sad part is the only other options are fully on board with CCP long term plans (China’s kmt and TPP). I really wish that weren’t the case, but they showed their hand WAY too hard during this past election. As if we needed more proof after Ma, but they provided crazy pro China mockery of our own country.

So here we are. Not with a good party, but with the only party that isn’t a legitimate traitor. Talk about a bullshit situation! We do need better than the DPP, I agree fully! They are corrupt as the CKMT, sure. But at least they stand for our country. Talk about a low bar, fuck.

How to not be boxed in with the threat of war.
It’s an impossibility. Status quo or capitulate, or worse.

Agree, a bullshit situation.

Corruption exists everywhere, it just gets hidden better and takes different forms in some countries. I don’t think it matters where on the political spectrum political parties belong either. Better to judge governments on their policies and their respect for the rule of law, rather then judging them by the actions of rogue individuals.

Exactly. Thus, the main point is DPP is pro Taiwan, CKMT is openly pro China. Both are corrupt, both can make money. Both give zero fucks about environment. But one does care about freedom and not being invaded whilst the other actively sabotages and tries to become part of the enemy. Rarely is politics so clear cut and objectively simple.

[!tldr] AI’s View
The PLA’s 2025 rhetoric and military posturing suggest Beijing is preparing for scenarios ranging from intensified coercion to limited conflict, contingent on Taiwan’s political trajectory and U.S. engagement levels. While China’s capabilities for a full-scale invasion remain incomplete, its expanding gray zone toolkit—legal, economic, and psychological—enables incremental pressure. Regional responses, particularly Japan’s rearmament and ASEAN’s economic hedging, will shape whether the Taiwan Strait becomes a fulcrum of great power war or a managed strategic competition. For Taipei, the challenge lies in fortifying societal resilience against hybrid threats while navigating a narrowing diplomatic space.

(Emphasis is mine)

Although still completely illegitimate and completely immoral, if a shit house nazi-like regime was to try and threatened a free democratic nation, now is the time. Especially whilst Trump still has power, and is clearly in cognitive decline like biden years ago. It’s a solid move by them. Too bad it’s all wrong, on every level. But, logical…from a psychopathy standpoint.

Key point, as it has been for many decades already. This isn’t about china being smart, no. They aren’t any kind of special. It’s more aligned with the global nations being greedy/sellfish/moronic and china simply being patient. In the end, everyone will agree with this point, which is tragically sad. Yet, well known, predicted and currently implemented by nearly everyone.

To time stamp this. The USA has still made zero commitment to protecting Taiwan. March 10, 2025. Still waiting for even a shred of evidence or even just kind words. So far, crickets, even from those in denial.

Plan B folks, writing is on the wall.

Feels like that message was meant for the US, as they often are. Maybe Australia too, with AUKUS being in the news recently.

I don’t think they’re patient. Patience to me is to keep quiet and play ball while building up the military quietly. When everyone’s guard is down and they think China is just like them, invade with all their might.

Continually screaming about it to me shows they’re not ready to do anything. Appear strong when you’re weak and weak when you’re strong art of war type of thing.

All they’re doing is weakening their economy for a country dependent on exporting and foreign investments to drive their economy. Continuing to act hostile doesn’t make people want to invest in China now the days of double digit GDP growth seems to have passed

and yet it is still hard to find things not made in China.

Well, I respectfully disagree. If we take other world orders into consideration historically. Current ones as well. They are certainly holding off actual invasions because they know they cna win via soft measures. I call that patient, even though they for sure aren’t being stationary. They are intentionally kving slow enough, and pushing certain envelopes to test, and they are winning this fight because the word seems too stupid to care. I refuse to believe the world doesn’t notice. It’s impossible people are THAT dumb. I blame greed and selfishness. And my opinion is Chuna is very wrll aware of this situation, also very well aware how easy it is to manipulate. Unlike Trump who wants all the credit. The Chinese are willing to hold off to give the nation more credit. Not totally, jot always, but WAY moreso than other world powers. It’s literally the reason they will win in my opinion.

The actual real world example of the saying: Tyranny prevails when good men do nothing.

We hear, see, talk to and etc many good people making justifications for buying made in chjna. No matter the excuse, deep down, ignorance is no excuse.
