Do you think citizens' duties in the Constitution of the Republic of China are unnecessary?

Canada and America treat their legal immigrants better than Taiwan though. Taiwan makes gaining citizenship really difficult for many, US and Canada the pathways are clearer.

Anyway Taiwan allowing it’s native born citizens or those with Taiwanese parents or those from random countries like Germany or Japan to hold multiple passports but not allow other would be citizens to hold dual citizenship is very strange, illogical and unfair. It’s also pretty stupid because it doesn’t help to attract the best and brightest to come here or stay here and have families. And certainly the biggest crisis Taiwan is facing is lack of children now. So in the end this so called fair policy is not fair to Taiwan society either, as so few kids will be born here. The youth population is crashing.

It makes zero sense considering it never effects them. They can be born with a 2nd or 3rd citizenship or accrue as many as they want.

Technically at the point of renunciation you’re no longer a foreigner, you’ve already naturalised, so it is unfair to a segment of ROC Nationals.

Yeh most Taiwanese have absolutely no clue about the process of actually becoming a Taiwanese citizen . The difference between nationals, citizens, the residency requirements, pre and post inationalisation, citizenship (ID number granting), what countries citizens are allowed to remain dual nationals , they have no clue.

I don’t blame them either because the process is different for people from different countries and it’s also a weird mishmash of rules and regulations that don’t really have any end objective . There isn’t even a citizenship oath or ceremony at the end of it. You just get passport with a Taiwan ID inserted into it and Taiwan ID card issued.

Most Taiwanese may as well be talking about deep sea fishing for all the knowledge they have about the subject.

When pointing out any unfairness or illogical parts the typical kneejerk response is react defensively or resort to random whataboutism about America (Chinese do this also..but wot about America…but wot about America ironically America handed passports out to Taiwanese like candy back in the day but Taiwan’s immigration laws treated Americans like shit including their kids that were born in Taiwan to America fathers) such as above that barely makes any sense. Can’t even use the word ‘fair’ in an appropriate manner .

Well the typical reaction of Taiwanese to me as well as to many long term foreign resident in Taiwan not having citizenship is , what you don’t have it yet, I thought you had it years ago ?

Just some salty people on the internet like to claim unfairness is somehow fair.

Strange? Yes.

Illogical? No. It is perfectly logical to favor your own people and make it difficult for others. See: pulling up the ladder effect in America and Canada.

Unfair? Yes. But the world isn’t fair.

Strange thread. What is this actually about. :joy:

If the citizenship issues rightfully pointed out by @Brianjones are the topic, then the best I can say is that the ROC ethnostate stupidities remain with us, but as Taiwan has tried to reform, it has done so in a piece meal and lurching manner, with at least some openings, not logical at all, but at least when people complain some things can and do change.

From my point of view, it’d be better to throw the whole ROC ethnostate into the rubbish bin, but as we know there are some complication involved in doing so. So here we are, with piece meal and sometimes strange results.

Guy

It’s not favouring your own people as they don’t need to naturalise.

Also, people who have naturalised are your own people, the requirement is post naturalisation. The the law hurts these new Taiwanese.

and remove the 5% sales tax while you are at it!!!

Yeah the dude has no clue what is involved and how it all works.
