i’ve had this experience. they absolutely KNOW today is payday. but they “forgot”.
not only that, they’ve asked you, begged you to find time to teach them, then they start asking you to cut the price beyond low, it’s ridiculous. now when payday comes, they forgot. or they don’t have it.
damn it. these people live at home. they have ah ma clean and cook for them. they don’t pay rent. all of their money is theirs. they’ll spend THOUSANDS of NT at a KTV but when it comes to the person they call “Teacher”, it’s “can i pay you next time?”
that’s why i don’t let ANY STUDENT call me teacher. i don’t need lip service.
“shr tu ru fu dz”
if you think i’m your teacher, don’t let me go without pay. you wouldn’t let your dad go hungry would you?
You don’t take the money up front? More fool you. What do you expect? My ex used to do privates. NT$8,000 per person per month in advance for 2 hours per week. Six per class. One cancellation per month on either side gets a make-up, any more, they lose the money. Candy off a baby.

Yeah Sandy, all well and good, but you’re talking about a teacher who can use uppercase letters.
8000 is a lot! they’ll always talk it down.
i always wonder how some guys can pull 80,000 a month in privates and never have any lip from them.
No it’s not. It’s average. At least, it was for my ex, and that was almost 20 years ago.
How do people do it? Be polite, assertive, charming, professional, marketable and fucking good at your job. Easy-peasy.
Edit: And the good-at-your-job bit is only required if you want to retain them for future sessions. You can get a one-time month’s-worth out of them even if you’re brain-dead as a teacher, as long as you have the former attributes.
