Staff at a local store carrying the Acer Aspire One with Windows 7 Starter installed told me that to get XP installed i would have to contact the company after buying the computer and the OS change would cost money. Is it possible to order an AO somewhere with XP already installed?
Not sure why you would want to do that? Windows 7 is a much better OS than XP and it’s already been 2 years to get the driver & compatibility kinks worked out.
I have an old AcerAspire One with XP… can’t help but feel that Win7 would be much BETTER!

I am always amused by the reflex reaction, “why would you want…?”, but i don’t mind answering that question. 
I have no idea what “better” means, but the default OS with that computer will be Ubuntu, and the reason for keeping some version of Windows at all is that on occasion i want to use some special old applications - and those won’t run under a 64-bit version of Windows (which is not needed for that kind of computer anyway). Of course, if possible i’ll buy a computer that already comes with XP pre-installed rather than installing it myself…
Win 7 ships in both 64 and 32bit. There is also XP mode which is a virtual machine that runs under Win 7 for the legacy apps. If that works for you, it may make what you want to do easier.
Microsoft doesn’t support XP anymore. Windows 7 is great. I’ve had no problems whatsoever. I bought an Acer Aspire One last year at this time with the full Windows 7 Home Premium, and I love it.
Thanks for that info. Checking up on it i found out that Windows 7 Starter comes in 32-bit mode only.
Having an XP mode would certainly do the trick. The problem is that “Windows 7 Starter” does not have that, only the “higher” versions of Windows 7.
I guess i’ll just have to find an old XP installer CD somewhere.
