Hi, well as some of you may know, i adopted Bruno, my Golden Retriever almost 2 years ago from the Taipei Animal Shelter, back then they gave me the papers for the adoption and added my name to the system for the chip… yesterday i brought him to the vet for some skin problems and in the process they asked me if it was chipped so that the can check it on the system, to this i said yes but i dont know the number, so they scanned the dog… everywhere… and they told me that the dog has no chip… they mentioned that the chip may be too old so the scanner cannot read it… but that would be a very very old chip that wouldn’t be on a dog that young…
so the question is… where is the chip? can they be dissolved inside the dog? or be damaged or something like that?
Maybe he got smart and found a way to trick a cat into wearing it for him?

Could he have scratched it out from under his skin? Remember any strange sores from a while back? I’ve never heard of that, though.
Maybe the vet is right, but in the sense that the chip is the type they were using before and it is not used commonly anymore. hence, they do not have the reader for it. There are two main types, but one has fallen out of favor, and not all places have the scanner that reads both.
Either that, or the groomer switched dogs on you. That is one of my greatest fears.

Even if you didn’t know your dog, your dog would know you.
Different system?
There are 10 digit numbers and 15 digit number not all readers can read both, also different makes. It has been known for chips to move down into the dog’s front legs and under the chest.
Maybe they charged you for a chip and for the insertion of a chip, and pretended to register you and the dog, but actually no chipping was done.

This happened to my cat. He was given the new 15 digit chip and a year later when he had his rabies booster the chip was no where to be found. The vet used all the scanners for all the chip types and tested the scanners with brand new chips.
The vet even carried out an x-ray and couldn’t find it.
A new one was inserted and a year later is still there.
Luckily I was able to change the chip number on the rabies blood test document you need for a pet passport. I didn’t need to go through that process again.

well i suppose i will have to find the adoption papers to bring them to the vet next weekend… and maybe get a new chip lol…

No. He said he hadn’t experienced it before.
A year after it happened I took him back for the booster and was wondering if the same would thing would happen with the new chip.
Luckily it was there and could be read. But come the next booster I will be wondering again.
As I have two cats and they sometimes play fight, I thought maybe something happened when they bit each other.
I remember the vet thought that was not possible and we couldn’t find it in the body in an x-ray.
